Quevedo Punches Out 10, Wildcats Cruise Past Bearkats

Mar 01, 2025 | Baseball

FRISCO, Texas – Ten strikeouts from Michael Quevedo and 13 hits from K-State's offense, including three home runs, fueled the Wildcats to a 14-3 victory over Sam Houston in the second game of the Frisco Classic Saturday afternoon at Riders Field.

"It was good to come to the park today with a little energy, especially after yesterday's heartbreaking defeat," K-State's head coach Pete Hughes said. "It was a good team win, and we got to use a lot of players, which is crucial at this time of year so you can build depth to your program. Our kids came to the park ready to win."

After Friday's disappointing, 8-5, loss to No. 2 LSU, the Wildcats (5-5) exploded for a season-high 14 runs on 13 hits – the most runs and hits produced by any team in a single-game in the 2025 Frisco Classic so far.

"We're not going to win every Friday night game, but we're going to try like crazy to do it. So, you got to get back in the series on Saturday and get back into that winning mindset. I thought our kids did that. They took a great batting practice, and we're able to take advantage of some miscues," added Hughes.

Quevedo (2-0) punched out a team-season-high 10 batters to pick up the win, that included seven strikeouts looking. He struck out the side in the third and fifth, while he became the first player to reach double digit strikeouts since Owen Boerema against West Virginia last season.

"Michael struck out 10 hitters, which, I don't know if there's a quiet way to do that, but I felt like it was. I was surprised to see 10, but he was way up in every count. He was 0-2, 1-2 most of the day and that's a huge advantage. Obviously, for a pitcher when you're up 0-2, 1-2 on a count you can really expand the zone, and that's where the strikeout numbers came from. He's a bulldog."

The left-hander finished the day holding SHSU to two earned runs on four hits with three walks in his five innings of work – his longest outing of the year.

Freshman Donte Lewis, who clipped for 96-mph in his second relief outing of the year, allowed one run over two innings before handing the ball over to Ty Ruhl. The senior right-hander shut the door on the Bearkats offense, firing a scoreless eighth and ninth.

Seven different Wildcats produced a hit with four turning in multi-hit and multi-RBI efforts. Juniors Kyan Lodice and Shintaro Inoue led the way offensively, both going 4-for-5 and combining for three RBI with four runs scored.

The duo launched back-to-back homers in the ninth, marking K-State's second consecutive game with multiple home runs and fourth overall this year.

"I thought we did a really good job situationally hitting and extending that lead so good team win. We look forward to building on that tomorrow and try to win a series, which is our mentality right now."

Maximus Martin drove in a game-leading three RBI, going 2-for-4 at the plate, while Keegan O'Connor and AJ Evasco both drove in a pair of runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After walking the first batter he faced, Quevedo quickly settled in, retiring seven consecutive batters and allowing just one runner to reach scoring position.

K-State sent nine to the plate in the second and turned in the team's third four-run inning of the season.

Led by a pair of walks for Nick English and AJ Evasco, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position with Maximus Martin at the plate. Martin hit a chopper to short to score English from third until the throw got away from the Bearkats' first baseman to easily score Evasco and take the 2-0 lead.

With two outs, Lodice and Inoue both singled into right field before the duo successfully executed a double steal to add two runs the Wildcats' lead.

The Bearkats tagged a pair of runs to the board with a two-run single from Brady Christensen, 4-2.

In the Wildcats' third time through the order, K-State got a run back in the fourth, as Inoue delivered a two-out single followed by a failed pick off at first that allowed Lodice to score.

The Wildcats put the game away in the seventh, exploding for five runs highlighted by two-run RBI single from Martin followed by O'Connor's first no-doubter of the season.
