#60 K-State plays on the road for first time in three weeks
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team is back on the road for the first time in three weeks, heading South to play Baylor on Friday (March 28) and Sunday (March 30) against TCU.
Â
#60 K-State (7-7, 4-3 Big 12) will start the weekend against the #22 Baylor Bears (15-3, 6-2 Big 12) on Friday at Hurd Tennis Center at 12 p.m. The Wildcats are 0-4 in the last four regular season meetings, losing last season at home in a close 3-4 result.
Â
Sophomore Charlotte Keitel was successful in that match last spring against Liubov Kostenko, potentially seeing a rematch on Friday as both women have played their previous matches in the no. 2 spot.
Â
On Sunday, the Wildcats will face the #37 TCU Horned Frogs (11-6, 5-2 Big 12) at 1 p.m. at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Courts. K-State is 2-2 in the last four match ups with TCU, both wins during the postseason in the first round of the Big 12 Championship.
Â
At the 2024 Championship in Stillwater, Okla., the Wildcats were victorious 4-3 being awarded the doubles point after a post-match protest, along with three singles wins.
Â
In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings released on March 18, the Bears have one woman ranked individually, Na Dong at no. 87, and one doubles pair, Kostenko and Cristina Tiglea at no. 24. The Horned Frogs have just one doubles team in the ITA rankings, Isabel Pascual and Jade Otway at no. 18.
Â
K-State is featured in the ITA team rankings for the first time in a month, at no. 60, after defeating then-ranked #35 Arizona 4-1 and a close match against #36 Arizona State in a 3-4 loss. During those two matches the Cats won consecutive doubles points for the first time this spring.
Â
The battle of the Wildcats resulted in three set matches on all six singles courts, the first time in at least 10 years it was required to clinch a dual match. Sophomores Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Tereza Polakova and senior Veronika Kulhava all collected a win, Polakova with the deciding point with a score of 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 over Zoya Chulak.
Â
Against the Sun Devils, Chogsomjav and Kulhava claimed consecutive singles wins, K-State up 3-1, but the team could not secure a strong finish losing the three remaining singles matches.
