K-State Drops First Conference Road Match, 4-0 Against #22 Baylor

Wildcats were previously 2-1 in road matches this season
WACO, Texas- The K-State women's tennis team lost its first Big 12 conference road match on Friday (March 28) in a scoreless 4-0 result to Baylor at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.

#60 K-State (7-8, 4-4 Big 12) dropped the doubles point against the #22 Baylor Bears (16-3, 7-2 Big 12) and could not bounce back in quick straight set losses. It is the first loss on the road for the Wildcats since February 15 against Auburn.

Sophomores Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Charlotte Keitel faced a consecutive ranked pair in #24 Liubov Kostenko and Cristina Tiglea in the no. 1 spot but came up short this time at 2-6. Senior Veronika Kulhava and junior Maria Santos were also unsuccessful in a tighter 4-6 match in the no. 2 position against Sierra Berry and Na Dong.

Junior Sana Garakani and sophomore Tereza Polakova were tied at 5-5 against Kennedy Gibbs and Zuzanna Kubacha before the match went unfinished in the no. 3 spot.

Kulhava suffered her first conference loss in the no. 5 position to Gibbs. She dropped the first set 4-6, and carried a lead in the second but could not keep the momentum in two similar scoring sets, 4-6, 4-6. Previously this season, Kulhava went unfinished in three matches, but had not lost a match since facing Auburn.

Competing in singles for the first time since March 9 against West Virginia, Garakani fell short in the first set to Nanaka Sato but put up a fight in the second. Playing in the no. 6 spot, she faced a tiebreaker in the second set but stumbled at the end, a final of 2-6, 6-7 (5-7).

After facing consecutive ranked opponents, freshman Zhanel Rustemova competed against Kostenko in the no. 1 position, falling 2-6, 3-6.

The three remaining matches also faced a tiebreaker, two in the first set, before stoppage. Chogsomjav was looking to secure straight sets over #87 Dong before faltering in the second set. Competing in the no. 3 position, she faced little resistance starting 6-1 but after taking a lead in the second she stumbled into a tiebreaker and fell short, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), not starting a third set.

Keitel faced Tiglea in the no. 2 spot, victorious in a high scoring first set. Securing a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker win, she was ahead in the second set at 2-1. Santos faced a similar scenario against Kubacha in the no. 4 position, but dropped her tiebreaker at 2-7, ending the match down 6-7 (2-7), 0-2.

K-State looks to bounce back against #37 TCU (11-6, 6-2 Big 12) on Sunday (March 30) at 1 p.m., CT at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
