MANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off its fifth top-five finish of the season last week, the Kansas State men's golf team quickly returns to action Monday and Tuesday as the Wildcats compete in the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship at the par-72, 7,088-yard Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi.
This is the sixth time in the last 10 years that the Wildcats will play in the Mississippi State-hosted event. After competing the last three years at Mossy Oak Golf Club, the tournament returns to Old Waverly Golf Club. K-State's best finish at Old Waverly was fifth out of 16 teams in 2016.
"We are looking forward to competing at Old Waverly this week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It's a fantastic venue that we haven't played in several years. With the renovations being done at Mossy Oak, the tournament was moved to Old Waverly for this year. It's more of a traditional-style layout that really puts a premium on the approach shots. We are going up against a strong field this year, which gives us a great opportunity to match up against some of the best teams in the country."
The field at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship consists of No. 15 Alabama, Cincinnati, Memphis, No. 3 Mississippi, No. 32 Mississippi State, Missouri, Murray State, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy, ULM and UTEP.
K-State is coming off a fourth-place finish last week at the Tiger Intercollegiate in Columbia, Missouri, as the Cats carded a 21-over par 861 on the difficult par-70 track. The Wildcats were led by junior Alex Lindstrom, who tied for 13th place at 4-over par 214. It was his third career top-20 finish and best finish as a member of the scoring lineup.
Lindstrom will be joined in the scoring lineup by seniors Nicklaus Mason, Kobe Valociek and Cooper Schultz in addition to freshman Erik Sabelström Holmberg. Senior Ian McCrary will compete as an individual.
Mason, a Shawnee, Kansas, product leads the team with a 71.13 scoring average – which currently ranks fourth in school history – but he will be looking to bounce back from a tie for 70th place a week ago.
A native of Peoria, Arizona, Valociek returns to the lineup after suffering an injury prior to the Tiger Intercollegiate. The former Virginia Tech transfer ranks second on the team and ninth in school history with his 71.76 scoring average this season.
Schultz got off to a slow start in Columbia last week but bounced back with a pair of 1-over par 70s in the final two rounds to climb up the leaderboard. The Andover, Kansas, product has a 72.21 scoring average this season to rank third on the squad, while his 71.89 career average is second in K-State history.
Sabelström Holmberg is making his second-straight appearance in the scoring lineup and his fourth overall during his freshman campaign. The Stockholm, Sweden, native tied for the second-best score among the team last week at 7-over par 217 to tie for 26th place overall.
McCrary, who hails from Overland Park, Kansas, tied with Sabelström Holmberg last week in Columbia. He holds a 73.50 scoring average this season with a pair of top-20 finishes.
An 8 a.m. shotgun start begins play for the first 36 holes on Monday, while tee times beginning at 8 a.m. off the first and 10th tees will be used for Tuesday's final round. Live results can be viewed on SCOREBOARD Powered by Clippd.
