Apr 20, 2025 | Track & Field
Overall 11 Wildcats and the men's 4x400 finished in the top-3
EUGENE, Ore. – The K-State track and field teams wrapped up competition at Hayward Field on Saturday (April 19) in the Oregon Team Invitational with top performances and personal bests in match ups against six other schools.
In a team scored meet, both K-State squads finished in 4th place, the women with 148 points and the men with 97.5 points. Other teams included Oregon, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Wichita State, Oregon State and the Women of Utah.
"It was an awesome experience," head coach Travis Geopfert said. "I really appreciate Oregon and coach [Jerry] Schumacher inviting us out here for a unique scored competition in the middle of the regular season. I think these are the types of things that we need to have to help our sport. The crowd was terrific today and the kids felt the energy."
The Wildcats thrived in the field events, with two women winning their event and four runners-up for the throwers. Overall, 11 athletes, and the men's 4x400 relay, finished in the top-3.
Junior Sharie Enoe won the women's high jump in her first meet of the season at a height of 1.81m (5' 11 ¼"). In the women's shot put, senior Jaycee Schroeder won the women's shot put for a consecutive meet, in her first time at Hayward Field, with a farther throw this time at 15.85m (52' 0").
Junior Gary Moore Jr. finished in the top-3 in two of his three throwing events. Starting the day with the men's hammer throw he recorded a new personal best over 5 feet at 67.58m (221' 8") for 3rd place, that throw is now no. 2 in the K-State top-10. In the shot put he finished runner-up with a distance of 17.45m (57' 3").
Senior Monique Hardy threw her own best in the hammer throw, an achievement four years in the making with her previous best from April 2021. She claimed 2nd place at 65.31m (214' 3"), over 2 feet from her previous best and still no. 5 in the record books.
Junior Tamaiah Koonce, in the women's discus, threw for the 2nd place spot as well with a distance of 51.75m (169' 9"). In consecutive days of competition, senior Shalom Olotu earned the runner-up spot in the women's long jump at 6.09m (19' 11 ¾") while sophomore Taylor Mayo recorded her best jump in 4th place at 5.83m (19' 1 ½").
The Cats also thrived on the track in the sprints-- freshman Quenton Rice ran just under 11 seconds in the men's 100 meter dash in a runner-up time of 10.59 seconds. Also in the 100 meters, sophomore Mikah Scott finished 5th in 11.66 seconds, a new personal best and the new no. 9 in the all-time top-10.
In the men's 110 meter hurdles, junior Cyrus Ways ran his fastest time at 14.15 seconds (2.5) in 3rd place, with fellow Wildcat senior James Ezeonu right behind in 4th place at 14.26 seconds (1.2).
Competing for the first time as a team, Ways, sophomores Nen Matlock and Tavon Underwood and Ezeonu ended the day finishing 3rd in the men's 4x400 relay in a time of 3:10.10.
K-State will have a quick turnaround with competition starting again on Thursday (April 24) at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. This will be the first time the Cats have attended the meet in three years.
