K-State’s Team Effort Leads to Another Top-Five Finish
Sep 16, 2025 | Men's Golf
COALVILLE, Utah – The Kansas State men's golf team rebounded from a 16-over par second round as the Wildcats turned in a final-round total of even-par 284 on Tuesday to finish in fifth place at The Wohali held at the par-71, 7,873-yard Wohali Club.
K-State concluded the event at 13-over par 865, finishing three shots ahead of Colorado State and six clear of a tie between San Diego State and UNLV.
Paired with last week's victory at the season-opening Wildcat Invitational, it marked the first time K-State finished in the top five of its first two season-opening events since winning the first three tournaments in the fall of 2022.
"I am really proud of how we competed this week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The guys showed a lot of grit in all three rounds and were able to post a solid finish. It was a team effort as Tyler (Strong) and Fionn (Dobbin) came up big today with a couple of solid rounds when we needed it. Alex (Lindstrom) put together two great rounds yesterday, and both Shea (Harmeson) and Ville (Virkkala) were really good all week. There is a lot to work on, but, all in all, I like where we are at. We just have to keep improving."
Kansas State was led in Utah by freshman Ville Virkkala, who tied for 12th place with a 54-hole score of 1-under par 212, one of only 13 players in the 70-man field to finish below par. It was his second-straight finish in the top 15 after placing eighth last week in the Wildcat Invitational. He became the first K-State freshman with top-15 showings in each of the first two events of a season since Kyle Weldon in 2011.
A native of Espoo, Finland, Virkkala turned in his second under-par round of the event on Tuesday with a final-round total of 2-under par 69. The freshman was 3-under par through the first 14 holes before consecutive bogeys in Nos. 15 and 16 threatened to derail his solid round. However, he was able to birdie the par-5 18th hole to tally his third round in red figures this season.
Virkkala finished The Wohali with a 2.92 scoring average on the par 3s and a 4.56 average on the par 5s to tie for first and fourth in the field, respectively.
Senior Shea Harmeson tied for 22nd place at 3-over par 216 following a final-round total of 1-over par 72. After carding a double-bogey on No. 6 on Tuesday, the Saginaw Valley State transfer went on to birdie three of his next four holes to stabilize his round.
Another senior, Alex Lindstrom, finished at 8-over par 221 to tie for 34th place. He was unable to carry the momentum that saw him in the top 10 after the first two rounds as he posted a final-round total of 7-over par 78.
Fionn Dobbin improved five spots on the leaderboard during the final round thanks to a score of even-par 71, which included a bogey-free and 2-under par front 9. The sophomore from Lisburn, Northern Ireland, tied for 39th place at 9-over par 222.
Sophomore Tyler Strong came back with a score of 1-over par 72 on Tuesday after first- and second-round scores of 7-over par and 10-over par, respectively. The Olathe, Kansas, native moved three spots up the leaderboard on Tuesday to tie for 60th place at 18-over par 231.
Arizona State and New Mexico shared the team title at 14-under par 838, one shot ahead of homestanding Utah and nine shots clear of fourth-place BYU. Utah's Davis Johnson and Arizona State's Connor Williams tied for the individual title at 9-under par 204, two shots ahead of a tie for second place.
Freshman Oliver Toyer and senior JP Roller went out on a high note in their tournament, the Soldier Hollow Individual, played at the par-72, 7,719-yard Soldier Hollow Golf Course in nearby Midway, Utah.
Toyer, a native of Cambridgeshire, England, carded a 2-under par 70 to improve 10 spots to tie for 28th place at 6-over par 222. His final round featured a bogey-free and 2-under front 9, while he ended his day with a birdie on No. 18 after a bogey on each of the previous two holes.
Roller made a 14-spot improvement on the leaderboard in the final round to tie for 33rd place at 8-over par 224. The Jenks, Oklahoma, product carded a 3-under par 69 on Tuesday – his best round in two seasons after battling injuries in 2024-25 – thanks to six birdies on the day, including birdies on four of his final six holes after starting the round on No. 5.
Kansas State returns to action next Monday and Tuesday as the Wildcats compete in the Git-R-Done Invitational held at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Nebraska.
