WBB Drops Road Contest at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa – Kansas State held 12th-ranked Iowa State to just 19-percent shooting in the second half but could not overcome an 11-point halftime deficit as the Wildcats dropped a 48-39 decision to the Cyclones Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.
With the loss, the Wildcats fell to 12-16 on the season and 4-10 in Big 12 play, while Iowa State improved to 22-5 and 10-4.
With Iowa State holding a 28-17 lead at the break, K-State closed the gap on the Cyclones at the start of the second half with a 10-3 run to bring the score to 31-27. The run was highlighted by five points from Branshea Brown, including a three-point play with 10:15 to play.
K-State got to within three at 35-32 with 7:10 left following a three-pointer by Brittany Chambers, but Iowa State scored four straight points to take a seven-point lead. Iowa State would later increase the margin to nine at 45-36 on a Chelsea Poppins jumper with 1:16 left to put the game away.
Ashley Sweat led Kansas State with 13 points, while Chambers was one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. The Wildcats shot just 34 percent from the floor for the game but held the Cyclones to 32.7 percent. K-State was out-rebounded by Iowa State, 37-28, while the Cyclones also held a distinct advantage in second-chance points (16) and points in the paint (24).
Iowa State used an early 10-0 run to take a 10-2 lead in the opening stages of the game. The Wildcats were able to respond, as Sweat went on a personal 8-0 run to even the score at 10 with 13:19 to play.
The Cyclones wrestled themselves into the halftime lead at 28-17, holding K-State scoreless for the final 5:14 of the half. Iowa State was able to hold a 21-12 edge on the boards, including seven offensive rebounds which resulted in nine second-chance points in the first 20 minutes.
Kansas State will conclude a two-game road trip on Wednesday night as the Wildcats visit Colorado at 8 p.m. (CT). The contest can be heard live on the K-State Sports Network with Brian Smoller and Kristin Waller delivering the action from Boulder, Colo.
