K-State Departs Head of the Oklahoma with Pair of Victories and Strong Performances
Oct 07, 2017 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team competed in their first of two fall races on Saturday, as the team took to the Oklahoma River to compete in the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The team took home a pair of first-place finishes in the women's novice 4+ and women's novice 8+ events, and saw several other strong performances.
Â
K-State began the day with three boats in the women's varsity 8+ event, as the first boat pushed across a sixth-place finish in 14:13.74, followed by eighth- and tenth-place finishes from the second and third boats that finished in 14:24.50 and 14:41.88, respectively. Immediately following, the women's novice 4+ comprised of coxswain Victoria Iacovetti, and rowers Abbey Hebbert, Caroline Geither, Jazzmyn Pekarek and Taylor Hartman, joined the action placing first overall with a time of 16:55.47.
Â
The Wildcats took home their second first-place finish in the women's novice 8+ event, as the N8 boat coxed by Iacovetti, and rowed by Leah Gaines, Aubrey Gilchrist, Macy Flory, Skylar Gottschalk, Hebbert, Geither, Pekarek and Hartman, finished the race in 15:42.29, over 20 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
Â
"It's always nice to see the novices win," head coach Patrick Sweeney said following Saturday's competition. "The novice races can be a bit unpredictable, but they did a good job and they did what we would have liked for them to have done."
Â
In the women's collegiate 4+, K-State's first boat placed ninth overall with a time of 15:58.54, and was closely followed in the results by K-State's second boat that finished 11th with a time of 16:09.15, and the third boat that placed 13th with a time of 16:18.35.
Â
"I think we're in good shape," Sweeney noted. "I would have liked for them to be a little sharper, a little more aggressive. If they can hold it together like they did this week, and add that aggressiveness, we'll be in good shape."
Â
K-State will compete in their second fall meet on Sunday, October 22 as the team heads to Lawrence, Kansas to compete in the Jayhawk Jamboree. The Jamboree marks the last of the team's fall races, as they prepare for the spring season.
