Third Varsity Eight Medals as Wildcats Take Third at the Big 12 Championship

BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – A gritty performance by a Third Varsity Eight (3V8) boat made up of eight underclassmen and one senior helped guide the Kansas State women's rowing team to a third-place finish for the first time since the 2015 season at the Big 12 Championship on Melton Hill Lake.

K-State finished the two-day regatta with 92 total points, 21 points behind second-place Oklahoma (113 pts.) and 45 points behind champions Texas (137 pts.). The score is the Wildcats' highest point total since finishing with 112 in 2014.
"The team raced really well and I am very happy for them," head coach Patrick Sweeney said. "It is a young team. However, every time they raced this season they got faster. I was pleased with how all five of the boats raced on both days this weekend."
The 3V8 posted an incredible group effort in the first Grand Final of the day, racing neck-and-neck with second-place Alabama (6:49.512) across the finish line to earn the bronze medal with a time of 6:49.716. The boat, comprised of coxswain Allie Kleinsmith and rowers Emily Stec, Madison Rebel, Taylor DeWeese, Molly Ross, Kaitlyn Bohl, Nikole Cain, Samantha Samskey and Abigail Dressler, shaved off almost 10 seconds from its heat time on Saturday (6:59.079) to earn the boat's first Big 12 medal since 2015.
"The Third Eight battled to earn the bronze medal," Sweeney added about the 3V8. "I thought that they did a really good job. That said, I thought the three eights all performed well. They were up against faster boats and were able to hang with them."
Both the Second Varsity Eight (2V8) and the First Varsity Eight (1V8) each raced in competitive finals to close out the weekend. The 2V8 finished in fourth place in its Grand Final, crossing the finish line in 6:45.478. The 1V8 raced down the course in a heated battle with Alabama (6:42.057), coming in just behind the Crimson Tide with a time of 6:42.883 to finish in fifth place.
K-State's Second Varsity Four (2V4) also recorded a fourth-place finish in its Grand Final with a time of 7:34.188 to finish ahead of in-state rival Kansas, Tennessee and West Virginia. The Wildcats' First Varsity Four finished in sixth place on Sunday with a time of 7:32.278.
"All of our kids are Kansas kids," Sweeney noted about the team as a whole. "None of them have ever rowed before, unlike the athletes from most of the other schools in the conference. What they were able to do this weekend by finishing in third place is incredible."
Senior captain Noelle Dykmann was recognized for her outstanding performances throughout the season by representing the Wildcats on the All-Big 12 Rowing Team. Dykmann competed in every race this season and won a gold medal in the 1V8 at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships (SIRAs).
