Jan 13, 2018 | Women's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State faced its fifth ranked opponent in the last six games on Saturday afternoon and the Wildcats responded with a wire-to-wire upset win over (20/22) Oklahoma State, 80-64, at Bramlage Coliseum. The win ends a three-game home losing streak for K-State.

Kansas State (11-6, 3-3 Big 12) had all five starters in double figures. Senior Kaylee Page led the way a personal season-high 20 points. Sophomore forward Peyton Williams added 18 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. The product of Topeka, Kansas, has scored in double figures in

Senior Shaelyn Martin carded her first career double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals. The native of Salina, Kansas, has five games this season and 12 in her career with 10 or more rebounds.

Freshman Rachel Ranke tallied 12 points and four assists. Ranke was 2-of-5 from beyond the arc. With her two three-pointers on Saturday, Ranke became the seventh freshman in program history to make 50 or more 3-point field goals in their rookie season.

Oklahoma State (12-3, 3-1) was led by Kaylee Jensen with 24 points and 13 rebounds.

For the afternoon, Kansas State shot 44.9 percent (31-of-69) from the field including a 10-of-21 (.476) performance from beyond the arc. Oklahoma State was held to a 33.3 percent (21-of-63) from the field, including 3-of-18 shooting from 3-point range.

What They Said

Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes
K-State Head Coach Jeff Mittie

Opening statement…
"I thought that from the start of this we were pretty active on both ends of the floor. We got off to a great start offensively, but I liked our activity defensively. We had a good awareness, we were creating some problems for them at that time. We went in the game trying to limit [Kaylee] Jensen's touches, and early we were very good at it. She is going to wear on you over time. She is such a good player. All in all, our activity level was good and our ball movement was there, and we distributed the points evenly because the activity was good. The ball got to the right people with better timing. As a coach, I am pleased today with our performance."

On team's strong offensive start…
"I think one of the things we did well today was being aware of when the other team falls asleep. We made plays like that all day. There are many times we have had people wide open and we were intent on running the play, and we did not see the other player fall. Today we had a good awareness and we played fearless. We have tried to get our group to throw some passes over the top, and today we got seven or eight. We played a lot more fearless as a group."

K-State Senior Forward Kaylee Page
On comfort on offensive end…
"It helped I got off to a good start. After that, Kayla [Goth] kept giving me the ball. I did not really have a choice."

On inspiration for recent stretch of success…
"[Kindred Wesemen] told me she had been watching the stat line of our past games in the last couple weeks and told me that I am too good of a shooter to not shoot the ball. Your team needs you to shoot the ball. They need you to take pressure off of Peyton [Williams], Kayla [Goth] and Rachel [Ranke]. She gave me a bit of a pep talk and told me that if she looked at the stat line against West Virginia and I had not shot the ball that I would be getting a meaner talking to after."

K-State Junior Guard Kayla Goth
On taking charge in the third quarter…
"[Shaelyn Martin] was up pressuring and I saw her lean back and look for the ball at the top. I wanted the steal, honestly, but then Coach [Chris] Carr bribed us a little bit with the charge. I think that is the first charge of my career. I was right there."

On watching Kaylee Page succeed…
"I love it. I have been trying to get her to shoot the ball along with Rachel [Ranke] and Cymone [Goodrich]. All of them can shoot the ball, and sometimes we defer away from that to run the plays. When Kaylee [Page], Cymone and other players are scoring off the ball it takes a lot of pressure off me and Peyton [Williams].

Oklahoma State Head Coach Quotes
Oklahoma State Head Coach Jim Littell

Opening statement…
"Credit to Kansas State today. I thought they played extremely well. Their execution, the way they shared the basketball and their unselfish play is indicative of having five people in double figures. I am disappointed with the way our group played. I did not think we played with the energy and fire that we needed to play to go on the road in a Big 12 game. K-State was really good today. We did not do a very good job of following our scout. We know what Kaylee Page is about after all of this time. It just seemed like she had numerous open looks and that was the difference in the ball game. When they came to our place she had three shots and she has 17 shots here, resulting in six threes. So credit her, she played really well. Peyton Williams is really good. The things that Shaelyn Martin does for their team are more than her 12 [points] and [11 rebounds]. [Kayla] Goth is a great player and [Rachel] Ranke is a very good young player. They played hard, shot the ball well from the perimeter, took care of it and did not turn it over and we did not play with energy or the effort on the defensive end that it takes to be successful in the Big 12. It seemed like every pass that we threw was deflected today and that is not conducive to having good offense."

On how much different K-State looked since their last matchup…
"They played really well in the second half against us down there. We kind of pressured them early, jumped on them and used some defense to create some offense. That was probably the difference in the ball game in the first quarter and a half. Then they made some adjustments and played extremely well. I thought they played well in the second half. When you are not ready to play and you jump on somebody 25-15, I think that is kind of how we jumped on them at our place, you find yourself digging yourself out of a big hole all night long and it is tough."

On K-State not allowing them to come back in the middle of the third quarter…
"It was a combination of some people getting beat. We tried to help off [Kaylee] Page and it went from six to 12. I thought that was the deciding point in the game if you are going to make a run on them. You cannot have any lapses defensively. We had a couple and she made us pay for them."

On their drought at the end of the first half…
"We were not moving bodies or moving the ball. Our offense is based on swinging the ball from side to side and we did not do that. I thought our bodies did not move, the ball did not move and K-State is pretty good guarding if you do not make them move, as is any team in this league. Their kids outplayed us in every phase of the game, they were much better on the defensive end of the floor, they executed a lot better and they were better on inbounds plays. In football you talk about offense, defense, special teams and different phases of the game – they beat us in every phase of the game today."
