Cats Travel to Iowa for ITA Central Regional Championships

MANHATTAN, Kan.?– The Kansas State women's tennis team will travel north to Iowa City, Iowa, to compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional Championships at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex beginning Friday,
Seven Wildcats are scheduled to play in the annual five-day event, including junior Ines Mesquita, sophomores Margot Decker, Maria Linares, Rosanna Maffei and Anna Turco along with freshmen Ioana Gheorghita and Maria Ponomareva.
On Friday, three Wildcat doubles teams will compete in the Round of 64 scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Singles action for the Cats will kick off Saturday, with the Round of 128 set to begin at 10 a.m.
Ponomareva and Gheorghita will be going against Oral Roberts' Valentina Gisbert and Andrea Vasilijevic in doubles, followed by Decker and Linares against Nebraska's Marina Cozac and Elizabeth Gould. The tandem of Mesquita and Turco will meet the Huskers' Hayley Haakenstaad and Claire Reifeis in the Round of 128.
Decker and Mesquita each reached the Round of 16 in singles in last year's ITA Central Regional Championships in Lawrence while the doubles duo of Decker and Linares earned a spot in the Round of 16 on the doubles side.
Mesquita and Turco led the team at the Hoosier Fall Classic in the team's last outing, where they both went 2-1 for singles matches.
Gheorghita and Ponomareva come into this tournament looking to improve after their weekend in Indiana. Gheorghita ended the weekend 1-2 while Ponomareva went 1-1.
Maffei will be back on the court for the first time since she went 2-1 in Fort Worth, Texas, at the Big 5 Challenge.
Decker and Linares appeared at the prestigious ITA All-America Championships two weeks ago that were held in Pacific Palisades, California.
