Wildcats Sweep No. 24 Baylor for Second Straight Ranked Win

Oct 20, 2018 | Volleyball

WACO, Texas – K-State redshirt freshman Brooke Heyne put down a career-high 15 kills, while hitting .467, and was one of four Wildcats in double-figure kills in lifting the Wildcats to a sweep of No. 24 Baylor, 25-23, 27-25, 28-26, at the Ferrell Center Saturday.

K-State (12-7, 2-6 Big 12) hit .304 as a team and produced 54 kills, its highest total in a three-set match this season, in knocking off its second consecutive ranked opponent. The Cats pick up their first road win over Baylor (12-7, 4-4 Big 12) since 2014 and their first road sweep of a ranked foe since 2002.

"It feels like things are starting to come together because we are doing things well over time," head coach Suzie Fritz said after her team's first sweep in Waco since 2007. "We are excited about that momentum we are gaining. I thought our serving was exceptionally effective. We forced (Baylor) into a lot of out-of-system situations which helps us to be a better defensive team."

Heyne committed just one attacking error on 30 swings while middle blocker Peyton Williams managed 11 kills on 20 swings without an error (.550). Redshirt senior Kylee Zumach added 11 kills while 10 more were tallied by freshman Gloria Mutiri.

K-State reached the 20-kill plateau in two of three sets, as each team produced 54 kills and 56 digs. The Cats had one more block than Baylor, 9.0-8.0, led by junior Elle Sandbothe's team-best five blocks (2 solo, 3 assists). Williams and Zumach each had four block assists.

Redshirt sophomore Devan Fairfield had a match-best 15 digs, her fifth consecutive match with at least 10 digs, and setter Sarah Dixon dished out 47 assists along with eight digs.

K-State erased an early six-point deficit in the first set after Baylor jumped out to a 7-1 lead. The Cats put together scoring runs of four points and three points to take their first lead at 15-14. After eight ties, K-State rallied to take a 1-0 lead by scoring six of the final nine points. Heyne and Williams each produced five kills with just one error between them. Mutiri and Zumach added four apiece, helping the Wildcat offense to 20 kills while hitting .333.

Behind four team blocks, the Cats suppressed the Bears' offense to just .179 in Set 2. Trailing 8-4, K-State proceeded to go on a 7-1 run to take a two-point lead, 11-9, and never trailed again in the frame. BU withstood two set points and knotted the game at 25, but a Heyne kill and a Sandbothe stuff block put the Cats up 2-0. Heyne had five kills in the second game.

The Cats trailed by as many as five in the final set and fought off a pair of sets points before closing the match on a 4-1 run, capped by kills from Williams and Mutiri. K-State hit .314 and picked up 20 kills as a team, led by Heyne's five in the last game.

The match saw a total of 24 tied scores and seven lead changes as the Cats won each set by the minimum two points, including going extra sets in the second and third sets.

Sophomore outside hitter Yossiana Pressley paced BU with 22 kills while middle blocker Shelly Fanning had 10 to round out Bears in double digits.

Baylor setter Hannah Lockin had 38 assists and 10 digs for the day's only double-double. Braya Hunt equaled Lockin with 10 digs.

The Wildcats embark on the second half of its Big 12 schedule at Ahearn Field House against Oklahoma Wednesday at 7 p.m. The match with the Sooners will be K-State's annual Cats for the Cure match and will air on FOX College Sports Central and stream free on K-StateHD.TV. Rob Voelker will be on the call on New Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM).
