K-State Finishes Home Stand Unbeaten
Nov 18, 2018 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State was paced by the combination of Kali Jones and Peyton Williams on Sunday afternoon, as the Wildcats finished their three-game home stand unbeaten with a 61-50 win over UMKC at Bramlage Coliseum.
Williams and Jones combined for 27 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots. Williams, a 2019 Katrina McClain Award candidate, registered her second double-double in as many games played by Williams with 13 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
Jones completed her solid weekend with a career-high tying 14 points. She missed her second straight double-double by a rebound, as she hauled in nine and tallied three blocks and two steals.
Kansas State (3-0) was sparked by Jones in the opening quarter, as she scored eight points and pulled down two rebounds. After the teams were tied at four, Jones scored six of K-State's next 10 points to give the Wildcats a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
K-State forced a UMKC (0-3) timeout at 6:08 of the second quarter following a hustle play by Williams. Williams chased down a missed free throw for an offensive rebound. After crashing into the UMKC bench, Williams hustled back into the play and Jones found her for the open layup to force the timeout, as K-State led 21-15.
After the layup, K-State was able to increase its lead to 26-18, as Christianna Carr finished a layup on an inbound play and Rachel Ranke converted three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt with 3:55 remaining.
UMKC closed out the second quarter with an 8-2 run to pull within two at the half, 28-26. The Kangaroos held K-State to one made field goal over the final five minutes of the second quarter to cut into the Wildcat lead.
K-State started the third quarter on a 10-0 run over a four-minute stretch to build a 38-26 lead. During the run, Williams buried a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired. She then chased down her own missed 3-pointer two possessions later and converted the layup to force a Kangaroos timeout.
The Wildcats were unable to build off the momentum and scored just four points in the final six minutes of the quarter. Defensively, K-State forced UMKC to shoot 13.3 percent in the quarter and hold a 42-33 lead entering the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Kansas State built a 16-point lead on the back of a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter. Jones started the run with a 3-point play. Williams followed with a jumper and Jones added a layup. Maary Lakes capped the run with a jumper. UMKC narrowed the final margin to 11 with three 3-point field goals in the final three minutes.
For the afternoon, Kansas State shot 39.7 percent (27-of-68) from the field and held UMKC to a 28.8 percent (17-of-59) performance.
For the first time since November 11, 2016, Kansas State registered 50 rebounds and held the edge in the category over UMKC, 50-38.
Kansas State will return to action on Thursday, November 22, as the Wildcats begin the Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico. K-State will face (18/18) Syracuse on Thursday, (15/15) DePaul on Friday and Princeton on Saturday.
All three games will be available on CBS Sports Digital and on the K-State Sports Network.
What They Said
Jeff Mittie, K-State Head Coach
On the game…
"There are a lot of things that I didn't like about this performance. I didn't think our focus was very good, and that's my concern right now. I think our team has to come in with better purpose and the effort plays early were going to UMKC. That's concerning to me. I thought we rested them fine yesterday coming off the Friday night, so we got pretty good rest yesterday, today we just seemed sluggish. Really only played well in that early third quarter stretch, that is probably the only stretch that I thought we played pretty well."
On the third quarter stretch...
"I thought we were engaged in that stretch pretty good. Rebounding was good in that stretch, we got some fast break points in that stretch, the open floor was better. We won certainly the paint war today, that was an area where we wanted to win, the paint war. So in that stretch I think all of those things were better."
On trying to get players back in tune...
"Both Chrissy [Christianna Carr] and Rachel [Ranke] are struggling to be efficient right now. Rachel took some wild shots today and I think that they have to play with a better purpose. I did think Chrissy got to the basket better today, she had a couple of post-ups. We are talking to her about doing those things more. They both have the ability to get off shots, but when it's not going we have to have the ability to get to the free throw line. We did that well the other night, but not tonight. I did not think we were very strong at the guard spot today."
On Kali Jones' production...
"I jumped her pretty hard one day in practice. The thing with Kali [Jones], she has good intentions and she wants to do well. I'm really not yelling at her because you're mad, in my case I was yelling at her to almost kind of spark some fight in her. She had kind of just started dropping her head on mistakes, and I think she just wants to play so well sometimes she does forget to have fun and you can't have that be a burden on you that you want to play well. The one thing that I didn't like from our group today, I didn't think that our effort was good. I don't think the things that we control were very good today. Her effort was excellent and she ended up having a really good game. She's such an activity player, and when she's active good things happen. She gets a lot of tips, she gets a lot of offensive boards. I think her activity just makes us a better basketball team."
On coaching against former K-State assistant Jacie Hoyt...
"I think she is doing a nice job with their team. They have a young team and they play very hard and they compete very well. For two hours for us, there are a lot of things that we have to do well but I will be cheering on UMKC the rest of the season."
Kali Jones, Senior Forward
On two big games in a row…
"I just remembered to have fun, encourage my teammates and get hustle plays. If I get a chance to get an offensive rebound that will get us back into it."
On Coach Mittie pushing her…
"In practice he got on me but he snapped me back into it. He made me realize that I am here for energy plays, to bring my teammates up and stay active. It definitely snapped me back into why I play basketball."
On their energy today...
"Knowing that our shooters are not doing so well as far as making their threes, Peyton and I just try to get those offensive rebounds and keep the play going. Keep it rolling."
On the tough week ahead…
"We are looking forward to challenge, to step up, see what our team is capable of when we do play higher teams like this, play well together and execute."
Peyton Williams, Junior Forward
On UMKC's defense…
"They had some aggressive players on the team that did their job on defense, trying to disrupt and get in the way. It was a little bit of a dry spell at the beginning."
On Kali Jones…
"She makes the little plays. She always gives effort on the rebounds. Tonight, there were some plays where they looked like they got the rebound and she said 'nope'. Her consistency will be key. Once we get to having these games like this she just keeps rolling. She is a good consistent player whose effort is always there and as she keeps improving it is going to be awesome to have her as another asset on the team. I am super excited about it."
On the lack of energy…
"In some ways we underestimated them. We could have played better and gave more effort on the boards."
On the tough week ahead…
"I think it will be a different feel for this team to be the underdog. For some of the younger players, they think 'we have to win this game or else it is going to look so bad'. So I think to step up to that challenge will be a different aspect and I think it will be a lot of fun and a good challenge for us to see that kind of competition. I think we are all looking forward to it."
