K-State Drops First Game of Season to (14/14) Syracuse

CANCUN, Mexico – Kansas State held a four-point lead early in the fourth quarter thanks to a strong defensive effort in the third quarter, but (14/14) Syracuse rallied in the fourth quarter for a 70-61 win at the 2018 Cancun Challenge.
Kansas State (3-1), who trailed the Orange by nine at halftime, dominated Syracuse in the third quarter by outscoring the Orange 17-6 and holding them to 3-of-11 shooting to construct a 48-46 lead at the end of the third stanza. The Wildcats were led by the forward duo of Kali Jones and Peyton Williams combining for 12 of K-State 17 points in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, K-State built its largest lead of the day at four points, 52-48, after a pair of baskets from Williams. Syracuse (4-1) recovered with a 20-2 run over a five-minute segment to build a 68-54 lead with 3:20 remaining. During the run, K-State was held to one made field goal.
Kansas State had a season-high five players in double figures and were led by Williams with 14 points, eight rebounds, a career-high six assists, three steals and a blocked shot.
Joining Williams in double figures was Jasauen Beard with 12 points and five rebounds and Jones with 10 points. Jones has now scored in double figures in three straight games.
The final two to reach double digits on Thursday were Kayla Goth and Christianna Carr with 10 points each. Goth added five assists and four rebounds to her final line. The 10 points by Carr marked her first career game in double figures.
Syracuse (4-1) was led by Tiana Mangakahia with 18 points, six assists and four steals, while Digna Strautmane added 13 points and five rebounds.
Beard helped bring Kansas State back to within five points at the end of the first quarter, 23-18. Syracuse was up by nine points, 21-12, but Beard came off the bench to score K-State's final eight points to pull the Wildcats to within five.
Beard started the second quarter with a pair of free throws to bring Kansas State to three, 23-20, with 9:01 remaining. Syracuse then dashed out to an 15-5 run to build a 38-25 lead with 2:33 remaining.
The Wildcats battled back to within nine points at the half, 40-31, as Carr scored seven of K-State's final nine points.
The Wildcats finished the afternoon shooting 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the field, while Syracuse tallied a 51.8 percent (29-of-56) effort. The Orange ended the day with a 36-22 edge in points in the paint.
Kansas State will continue action at the 2018 Cancun Challenge on Friday morning at 10 a.m. (CT), as the Wildcats face (16/16) DePaul.
