K-State Splits Doubleheader with No. 12 Texas, Missouri State

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State tennis split a Sunday doubleheader, sweeping Missouri State, 7-0, after earlier falling to No. 12 Texas, 4-0. at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
K-State (11-4, 1-1 Big 12), the 40th-ranked team in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, got straight-set victories at all six singles positions after it had claimed the doubles point from the Bears (5-6) for a 7-0 win in the second match of the doubleheader.
Earlier in the day, K-State and Texas (11-4, 2-0 Big 12) needed three sets in all six singles matches before the Longhorns completed a 4-0 victory over the Wildcats.
The Cats quickly earned the doubles points against the Bears with a 6-0 win by the No. 3 duo of Anna Turco and Ines Mesquita over Fati Khamissi and Alexia Meyer. K-State's No. 1 team of Carolina Costamagna and Margot Decker followed suit with a 6-1 victory over Alye Darter and Ellie Burger.
K-State went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets, led by Decker at the No. 1 slot with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Darter. Costamagna added a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 and Rosanna Maffei with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the third position.
At the four position, Turco claimed a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Khamissi while Mesquita earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Burger. Senior Carolina Lewis won her third match of the spring from the No. 6 spot, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Abbey Belote.
All eight Wildcats now have a .500 record or better singles record.
Against Texas, the ITA's 12th-ranked team, K-State claimed the opening set in all six singles matches as each match went to a third and final set before Texas claimed wins at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 to claim the match.
At the No. 1 spot, Decker took the first set from the nation's top-ranked player, Bianca Turati, 6-4. The match was in the third set after Turati won the second set, 7-5, but remained unfinished when the 12th-ranked Longhorns clinched the match with their fourth point.
Maria Linares also won the first set against No. 34. Anna Turati, 7-6 (4) and the match was headed for a decisive set after Turati's 6-4 win in Set 2, however, remained unfinished.
At the No. 6 position, Mesquita claimed the opening set from 91st-ranked Katie Poluta, 7-5. Poulta leveled the match at a set apiece with a 6-2 win in the second set.
Costamagna fell in three sets at No. 3 to the ITA's No 64 player, Petra Granic, 6-3, 3-6, 1-6, while Rosanna Maffei and Anna Turco each fell in three sets at the four and five positions, respectively.
The Longhorns took the doubles point with victories on Courts 2 and 3. The pair of Marta Perez-Mur and Bianca Turati defeated Linares and Maffei, 6-3 at No. 2 and K-State's No. 3 doubles tandem of Turco and Mesquita dropped a 6-1 decision to Anna Turati and Poluta.
The Wildcats hit the road for a pair of Big 12 matchups in the state of Texas. The Cats will meet No. 47 TCU (9-6, 0-0) in Fort Worth on Friday, March 23, at 5:30 p.m., before facing off with No. 9 Texas Tech (10-3, 0-0). K-State will play five straight road matches before returning home on Sunday, April 15 against Kansas.
