Heskett’s Quality Start Not Enough as Cats Fall at TCU
Mar 25, 2018 | Baseball
FORT WORTH, Texas – K-State starting pitcher Justin Heskett went six innings and gave up just two hits, but No. 15 TCU used two separate three-run innings to complete a three-game sweep, 6-0, over the Wildcats Sunday at Lupton Stadium.
Heskett (2-2) did not give up an earned run in his six frames of work, but three walks and two errors from his defense allowed TCU (14-7, 3-0 Big 12) to plate three unearned runs in the first inning. From there, the senior right-hander did not walk a batter and scattered just two hits while he retired the final eight TCU hitters he faced.
K-State (12-12, 0-3) had just four hits, none for extra bases, as it lost its fourth consecutive ballgame and begins conference play 0-3 for the fourth straight season. The Cats have lost their last nine games overall to the Horned Frogs and fall to 0-9 all-time at Lupton Stadium.
TK McWhertor, Drew Mount, Cameron Thompson and Dylan Watts each singled for K-State.
TCU starter Sean Wymer lasted a season-high 7 2/3 innings and surrendered three hits while striking out nine. Wymer earned his second win of the season.
Two Frog relievers combined to keep the shutout in tact over the final 1 1/3 innings. In the series, the TCU bullpen allowed one hit over seven innings and did not allow a run while striking out nine batters.
K-State had multiple base runners in both the eighth and ninth innings but left six runners on base. The Cats went 0-for-6 in the game with runners in scoring position and were just 2-for-26 (.077) in the three-game set.
It remained a three-run ballgame until the bottom of the seventh, when TCU doubled its lead with three runs on three hits. Catcher Zach Humphreys delivered a three-run double off Wildcat reliever Mitch Zubradt.
Zubradt allowed three earned on three hits in one inning of work.
Freshman Andrew Stratman saw his first action of the series as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Cats, allowing one base hit with a strikeout.
TCU shortstop Adam Oviedo and third baseman Conner Shepherd each had two-hit games to lead the Frogs. Leadoff hitter Connor Wanhanen scored twice.
K-State will return home for a Tuesday night matchup with Omaha of The Summit League at Tointon Family Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. The game with the Mavericks will be streamed live on ESPN3 and the ESPN app, while fans can also be listen live on KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and streaming live on kstatesports.com.
