Wildcats Find Valuable Water Time at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Kansas State women's rowing team found valuable water time this weekend, as the Wildcats put five boats in finals events, including a fifth-place finish in the 1v8+ grand final at the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, California on Sunday.

"Overall, it was a good camp, we got a lot of information that we can continue work on and hopefully keep benefitting," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said of the team. "Everyone was happy to get on the water, we are hoping to get more water time here in the next few weeks to keep improving."

On the first day of competition, the 1v8+ boat of coxswain Samantha Scott and rowers Marissa Butrum, Mikaela Bennett, Grace Reilly, Kennedy Felice, Mattie Warner, Elaina Grantham, Rachel Haskell and Lauren Costello fought through the 2,000-meter course, placing third in 7:16.83 to qualify for the grand final on Sunday.

A day later, the boat competed against San Diego State, Sacramento State, Southern Methodist, Loyola Marymount and the University of Victoria in the event grand final, where the K-State 1v8+ boat crossed the line in 7:22.54, finishing fifth overall.

After the Wildcats earned their first grand final on Saturday, the women's 1v4+ boat of coxswain Allie Kleinsmith and rowers Taylor DeWeese, Selena Wapelhorst, Logan Frost and Abigail Dressler fought through the 1v4+ race on Saturday, earning a third-place finish in 7:46.36 to qualify for the petite final on Sunday.

In the 1v4+ Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup final on Sunday, the Wildcats earned a silver medal finish in the petite final, finishing in second in 8:09.73, behind only Tennessee.

The K-State 2v8+ boat also earned qualification into the petite final on Saturday, as the lineup of coxswain Emily Johnson and rowers Kaylin Edwards, Madison Rebel, Natasha Johnson, Jordan Lund, Molly Ross, Kaley Dalinghaus, Samantha Bendrick and Caroline Geither pushed through the course by placing fourth in 7:10.11 to earn a bid in the petite final on Sunday.

The 2v8+ crew returned on Sunday for their final, where they faced off against the University of Victoria, Gonzaga, Tennessee, Sacramento State and San Diego State. Situated in lane six, the K-State boat put together a hard-fought race to place fourth in 7:24.85.

Also, on Sunday, the 3v8+ and 2v4+ boats made their first appearances on Mission Bay. In the women's 2v4+ Collegiate Open Finals, the crew comprised of coxswain Bailey Beatty and rowers Abbey Hebbert, Cathy Leavitt, Leah Gaines and Nikole Cain crossed the finish line in 8:21.85 to finish sixth overall.

In the final event of the San Diego Crew Classic for the Wildcats, the 3v8+ boat of Aimee Farrell, Samantha Samskey, Taylor Hartman, Marisa Rodriguez, Laura Clement, Aubrey Gilchrist, Paige Rohner, Emma Witter and Tessa Davids competed in the 3v8+ Open Copley Cup Finals, finishing in sixth place to round out the Wildcats' weekend.
After concluding the spring camp out West, the Wildcats will return home to focus their attention on the second-annual Big 12 Dual meet on Saturday, April 7 in Kansas City, Kansas. At the dual, the Wildcats will get their first opportunity to race head-to-head against conference opponents, Alabama and Tennessee.
