Wildcats Face Off Against Conference Foes at Big 12 Double Dual

Apr 06, 2018 | Rowing

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team will go head-to-head against Big 12 Conference opponents Tennessee and Alabama on Saturday, as the teams compete in the second annual Big 12 Double Dual on Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Wildcats will get their first opportunity to compete head-to-head against Tennessee and Alabama on Saturday. K-State will start off the morning session by racing Tennessee beginning at 12:10 p.m. CT, before racing against Alabama beginning at 2:40 p.m. The Big 12 Double Dual serves as the first of two spring regattas on Wyandotte lake for the Wildcats, as the team will return for the Sunflower Showdown on April 28.

"Both Alabama and Tennessee are strong, they are getting stronger and looking good, so it is going to be interesting," head coach Patrick Sweeney said. "But at the same time, our team has been handling things well considering the lack of time we have been on the water and they have been training hard."

The Big 12 Double Dual is in its second year of existence. For the dual, the Big 12 Conference divides the eight Big 12 teams (made up of five Big 12 schools and three conference rowing affiliate schools) into four travel partner pairings. Those pairings then rotate each year to meet at one of two Big 12 Dual events. The Big 12 Double Dual was introduced in 2017 to promote intra-conference competition, where K-State faced off against Oklahoma and Texas in the inaugural competition.

The other Big 12 Double Dual event will take place this Saturday in Richmond, Virginia where travel partners Texas and Oklahoma will face off against Old Dominion and West Virginia.

K-State is coming off their spring camp from two weeks ago, in which the Wildcats went out West to compete in the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento, California and the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, California. While in the Golden State, the Wildcats were able to get experience on the water, something that has been hard to find this spring.

"We have only been on the water twice since San Diego," Sweeney said. "I really think the team is handling the situation well, they are doing what they can to deal with the lack of water time and they will race hard into the weekend."

The Big 12 Double Dual this weekend serves as the team's fourth competition this spring, as the team prepares for the Big 12 Championship that takes place on May 12-13 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
