Cats go 1-3 in singles play
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State women's tennis team lost back-to-back matches for the first time this season, as it was defeated by No. 17 Kansas, 4-1, on Sunday at Body First Tennis Center.
"This was a disappointing loss for sure, but the way we battled on every court, and the grit we showed is something I am extremely proud of," head coach Danielle Steinberg said. "We had a rough outing on Friday against Wichita State, where we did not give ourselves the opportunity to get into matches and fight for them, and the team really took it to heart to change that today. Today's team is the team I know and love, and that's the team that is taking this program to special places."
The Wildcats (14-7, 4-3 Big 12) had a chance to overcome a 3-1 deficit, holding leads at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, before the match was decided at No. 4 singles. K-State caps this week going 2-6 in singles and 1-4 in doubles against two ranked teams in Wichita State and Kansas. The program drops to 14-44 all-time against Kansas, taking a loss in each of its last five contests against the Jayhawks.
The Jayhawks (14-4, 6-1 Big 12) win their 10th match in their last 11 contests, including winning five straight matches. KU played without the nation's No. 10 player, Anastasia Rychagova.
Kansas narrowly claimed the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead with wins on courts Nos. 1 and 2. The Cats have fallen to 49-35 in all competition this season, 28-25 in the dual match season and are 5-12 in Big 12 play this season.
At No. 2 doubles, Maria Linares and Anna Turco have lost back-to-back matches after being outlasted by Kansas' Janet Koch and Amber Policare, 3-6. The duo is 2-3 overall this season.
The Cats' tandem of Rosanna Maffei and Ines Mesquita won the team's only match in doubles on the day against Despoina Vogasari and Maria Toran Ribes, 7-5. The team has won its last three matches, improving to 4-1 this season.
KU clinched the point as K-State's top team of Margot Decker and Carolina Costamagna lost its third consecutive match this season vs. the nation's No. 84 pairing in Nina Khmelnitckaia and Tatiana Nikolaeva, 5-7. The pairing knotted its doubles match at 5-5 before losing two straight, moving to 10-7 this season.
The Wildcats went 1-3 vs. KU's singles lineup, dropping to 64-41 (.610) this season in singles competition this spring and 16-13 in Big 12 play.
K-State knotted the match at 1-1 as Linares managed to overcome Koch, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Linares grabs her second consecutive match and moves to 5-3 this season in three-set matches. The freshman is 12-4 this spring and 5-3 from the No. 2 position.
The Jayhawks reclaimed a 2-1 lead with Decker dropping her match No. 67 Despoina Vogasari, 6-7(0), 6-3, 2-6. The product of Blodelsheim, France, drops to 15-13 this season, 8-10 in spring competition and back-to-back matches for the fifth time this season.
After winning the first set, Costamagna was outlasted by Khmelnitckaia, 7-5, 2-6, 4-6, as KU extended its lead to 3-1. The four-year senior drops to 10-8 this season and has fallen in two matches in a row while she moves to 17-14 overall this season.
The Jayhawks clinched their 44th win over K-State as Turco lost in three sets to Ribes, 2-6, 6-3, 0-6. After being inserted into the No. 4 position for just the third time this season, the freshman falls to 8-5 and lost both of her matches on the week.
Maffei and Mesquita were each on the brink of winning their respective matches before KU sealed its fourth point. Maffei held a 6-3, 5-4 lead and Mesquita led 6-1, 5-1.
The Cats will close out their regular season against two teams from the state of Oklahoma before heading to Austin, Texas for the Big 12 championships. The Cats will face Oklahoma on Friday, April 20 at 3 p.m. and Oklahoma State on Sunday, April 22 at 11 a.m., both scheuled at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
