No. 38 K-State Outlasted by No. 50 Oklahoma, 4-1

K-State falls to 3-7 vs. ranked opponents this season

MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 38 K-State women's tennis fell 4-1 to the 50th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners on Friday at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
 
The Wildcats (14-8, 4-3 Big 12) drops their third consecutive match and fifth match in a row against a ranked opponent. The Cats went 1-3 in singles and 1-2 in doubles play. K-State falls to 13-31 all-time and 5-12 at home against the Sooners.
 
The Sooners (14-10, 4-4 Big 12) were victorious in three of the first four matches in singles play on the day. Oklahoma, winners of three of its last four, concludes its season on the road at Kansas on Sunday.
 
The doubles point came down to tiebreak at No. 2 doubles after the teams split on Courts 1 and 3. Oklahoma opened a 1-0 lead after taking the decisive match. The Cats are now 50-37 overall with a 29-27 in the dual match season and are 6-14 in Big 12 play this season.
 
At No. 3, Rosanna Maffei and Ines Mesquita defeated Oklahoma's Simran Kaur Sethi and Camila Romero, 6-1. The pairing continues to have success at the No. 3 position, improving to 4-0 this spring.
 
At No. 1 doubles, Carolina Costamagna and Margot Decker lost to the Sooners' Christiana Brigante and Jasmine Asghar, 5-7. K-State's top pairing drops its fifth consecutive matches this season dating back three weeks. The pairing now owns a 10-8 record this spring with a 1-5 mark in Big 12 play.
 
The Sooners clinched the doubles point at No. 2 doubles as Maria Linares and Anna Turco were outlasted in tiebreak by Lily Miyazaki and Malene Stripp, 6-7(2). After holding a 5-3 lead in the match, the pairing drops to 2-4 this season.
 
After losing three of its four matches, K-State's singles record drops to 65-44 (.596) this spring and 17-16 in Big 12 play.
 
K-State knotted the match at 1-1 as Turco defeated OU's Romero, 6-4, 6-2. Turco notched her ninth victory of the season and third from the No. 4 position in the singles lineup.
 
Decker lost her match against the nation's 38th-ranked Miyazaki, 4-6, 1-6, moving the match to a 2-1 deficit for K-State. The freshman falls to 8-11 this spring with a 1-7 record this spring against ranked opponents.
 
Oklahoma took a 3-1 lead as Costamagna lost to Oklahoma's Brigante, 6-7(2), 4-6. The four-year senior, who will be recognized on Senior Day on Sunday, drops to 17-15 overall this season.
 
The Sooners secured their 4-1 victory as Linares lost to Asghar, 6-7(2), 6-2, 2-6. The freshman remains as the leading Wildcat in singles play with 12 wins this season.
 
For the second consecutive match, Maffei and Mesquita had their matches halted in the third set. After dropping the first sets in their match, each of the Cats players bounced back with second set victories. Maffei was knotted up in her match with Sethi, 6-7(4), 6-2, 2-2. Mesquita, the product of Portugal, was tied at 6-7(3), 6-4, 1-2.
 
On Sunday at 11 a.m., K-State seniors Costamagna and Carolina Lewis will be recognized on Senior Day Oklahoma State owns the 21st, 37th, 99th and 121st- ranked singles players, while boasting the nation's No. 12 doubles tandem.
 
Should weather force competition indoors, the match will be held at Body First Indoor Tennis Center located at 3615 Claflin Road in Manhattan.
 
Following this weekend's action, the Cats will head to Austin, Texas for the Big 12 championships at the University of Texas' campus beginning April 26.
