Cats Prepped for First NCAA Tournament Since 2003

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's tennis team is set to make its first appearance in the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship since 2003, as it will meet Kentucky in the First Round Friday at 12 p.m. at Vandy Christie Tennis Center on the campus of Northwestern University.
K-State (14-10) will make their fourth all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first since reaching the Round of 16 in 2003. The 42nd-ranked Cats will meet No. 26 Kentucky (14-10) for the first time in program history.
Northwestern hosts the four-team pod as the No. 14 national seed, as it will face Buffalo Friday at 3 p.m. The winners of the first-round matchups will meet Saturday, May 12 at 12 p.m. for a berth in the Round of 16 hosted by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, beginning May 17.
Fourth-year head coach Danielle Steinberg's squad equaled the program's third-highest win total during the regular season with 14 and most since the 2011-12 season, finishing the regular season as the No. 42 team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
The Cats feature four freshmen with a combined singles record of 41-32 in the spring season and have filled four of the top five positions in the lineup, including Margot Decker who has occupied the top spot.
Fellow freshman Maria Linares has a team-best dual record of 13-6, primarily playing at the second position.
Freshman Rosanna Maffei and sophomore Ines Mesquita each turned in 11 victories during the spring season. Mesquita enters postseason on a four-match winning streak while Maffei has won her last two matches. The pair also posted a perfect 5-0 mark in doubles matches together, all in conference play.
Anna Turco, an Italian freshman, collected a team-high four singles wins in Big 12 play at the fifth spot.
Carolina Costamagna reached double-figure singles wins with 10 in her senior campaign at the No. 3 position. Costamagna, paired with Decker, picked up 10 doubles victories as the Cats' top tandem.
K-State owns a 3-3 record all-time in the NCAA Tournament, going as far as the Round of 16 in 2003. The Cats also reached the postseason in the 1996 and 1998 seasons.
Kentucky ended the year as the No. 25 team in the ITA poll, falling in the second round of the SEC Tournament.
