Wildcats Looking to Continue Strong Play at Royal Oaks
Oct 18, 2019 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – A week ago, the Kansas State men's golf team took a break from standard tournament golf and found great success while finishing third at the Big 12 Match Play Championship. The Wildcats are hoping for a similar good result in another non-traditional format, as the team heads to Dallas, Texas to play in the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.
The event, hosted by Big 12 foe Baylor at the Par-71, 7,068-yard Royal Oaks Country Club, will be played under the "Maxwell" format, with all five players form each team paired up together. The two-day tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday starting at 8:15 a.m. with continuous play into the second round followed by Tuesday's final round of 18 starting at 8:30 a.m., both days being shotgun starts.
"We are looking forward to competing at Royal Oaks this weekend," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It's a strong field and a very good golf course that puts a premium on driving the ball well. It's a different format where the team all plays together so hopefully the guys will be able to feed off each other and put together a solid week."
The Wildcat's are coming off of their best tournament of the year, a 3rd place finish at the Big 12 Match Play Championship, which included upset victories over higher ranked teams foes in Baylor and Oklahoma, and a tie with Texas.
Following his terrific debut, freshman Tim Tilmanns finds himself back in the lineup. The Cologne, Germany product finished last week's Big 12 Match Play Championship 4-1 individual, a team-best and big reason K-State was able to notch upsets.
Joining Tilmanns in Dallas will be senior Jacob Eklund, junior Kyle Vance, sophomore Will Hopkins, and fellow freshman Riccardo Leo.
The Royal Oaks field is full of ranked teams, including (11)Baylor, (40)Charlotte, (69)Iowa, (54)Kent State, (53)Liberty, Michigan, Nebraska, (56)New Mexico State, North Texas, (6)SMU, and UTSA.
Live scoring of the 2019 Royal Oaks Intercollegiate can be followed hole by hole on golfstat.com, as the Wildcats tee off on hole 14 at 8:15 a.m. (CT).
