Feb 23, 2019 | Track & Field
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams concluded their competition at the Big 12 Indoor Championship on Saturday, where the K-State women scored 102 points to place third as a team, while senior Shardia Lawrence and sophomore Tejaswin Shankar claimed individual Big 12 titles.
The 102 points scored by the K-State women marks the fourth time in K-State indoor history that the Wildcats have broken the 100-point barrier, while recording their best Big 12 finish since 2016. The K-State men registered an eighth-place finish, scoring 56 points, while the Texas women won the team competition with 128 points and the Texas Tech men won with 179 points.
With junior Helene Ingvaldsen's Big 12 title in the women's weight throw on Friday, the Wildcats continued the trend on Saturday, with Lawrence winning the second K-State individual championship in the women's triple jump.
After fouling on her first two attempts, Lawrence bounced back on her third attempt by jumping 12.94m/42-05.50 to enter the finals situated in fourth. Junior Konstantina Romaiou put together her biggest mark of the day on her third attempt, jumping 12.99m/42-07.50 on her third attempt, which placed her fourth overall at the end of the competition.
Lawrence, a native of St. Catherine Jamaica, won the event on her fourth attempt by jumping 13.23m/43-05 to win her first-career Big 12 Championship.
"I felt pretty great overall, on my jumps and everything," Lawrence said. "It really means a lot because last year I didn't make the finals and now I was able to win."
The second Big 12 Championship of the day came in the men's high jump, where sophomore Tejaswin Shankar tied his Indian National Record of 2.28m/7-05.75 to win the event.
Shankar was flawless through his first four heights, clearing up to 2.19m/7-02.25 without a miss. With the bar at 2.25m/7-04.50, Shankar missed on his first attempt while Texas Tech's Jah-Nhai Perinchief cleared on his first attempt, causing Shankar to pass on his final two attempts at 2.28m/7-05.75, and attempt 2.28m/7-05.75.
On his second attempt at the height, Shankar cleared 2.28m/7-05.75, which resulted in his first-career Big 12 title. Shankar also went on to attempt 2.31m/7-07 and 2.32m/7-07.25, before narrowly missing on his three attempts at the heights.
"What matters most to me was the competitiveness of the jumps," Shankar said. "Going into that jump (2.28m/7-05.75), I was only thinking about what I had to do in order to jump and not the outcome."
In the men's 600-yards, freshman Antoni Hoyte-Small ran to a new school record in the event, clocking a 1:08.59 to break the 30-year school record set by Jeff Reynolds of 1:08.73 set in 1989. Hoyte-Small went on to place fifth in the event in his Big 12 debut.
Along with Hoyte-Small's record, several Wildcats inched closer to school records.
In the women's 600-yards, redshirt freshman Alex Ferguson ran the second-fastest 600-yard time in K-State indoor history, running a 1:20.12, which placed her second overall. Ferguson's silver medal comes after having an impressive indoor season, including earning Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors earlier this season.
Redshirt freshman Kassidy Johnson also continued her standout season on Saturday, where she clocked the second-fastest 1,000 meter time in school history, running a 2:45.69 to place second overall.
In the men's and women's shot put, K-State garnered a pair of second-place finishes between the men's and the women's competitions, including senior Brett Neelly placing second with a throw of 19.69m/64-07.25 on his fifth attempt, while sophomore Taylor Latimer also placed second with a best throw of 16.02m/52-06.75.
After competing the first five events of the men's heptathlon on Friday, the trio of Simone Fassina, Matas Adamonis and Kyle Parr finished strong on Saturday, leading to all three individuals claiming personal bests. Fassina led the pack with a final score of 5,448 points to place third overall, while Adamonis placed fourth (5,170 points) and Parr placed seventh (4,852 points).
In total, K-State placed 19 individuals/relays on the podium on Saturday, including 9 from the men's team and 10 from the women's.
