BLUFFTON, South Carolina – For a third-straight round, the Kansas State men's golf team moved up the leaderboard as the Wildcats posted a third-place finish following Tuesday's final round of the Colleton River Collegiate played on the par-72, 7,180 yard Pete Dye Course at the Colleton River Club.
The Wildcats, who came into the final round in fifth place, shot the best score among all 14 teams in the field on Tuesday at even-par 288. K-State finished the event at 4-over par 868 to move past 47th-ranked Iowa by one shot.
Jacob Eklund, who shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday, finished the tournament in seventh place by carding a 3-under par 213 to lead the team. Roland Massimino finished at 2-under par 212, placing right behind Eklund in a tie for eighth place. Senior JC Campbell had one of only seven under-par rounds among all 84 players on Tuesday to move 18 spots up the leaderboard to a tie for 29th place at 5-over par 221.
"The guys showed a lot of toughness today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The course played difficult and we made some mistakes early on, but the guys just kept grinding and we were able to move up a couple of spots. As a team, I thought we took another big step this week. Jeremy (Gandon) and Ben (Fernandez) did not have their best stuff but they battled, and Jake, Roland, and JC really came through with solid finishes. I really like this team. We just need to keep working and getting better."
Freshman Will Hopkins, who competed as an individual, tied with Campbell for 29th place. Senior Jeremy Gandon moved 11 spots on the board to finish in a tie for 32nd at 6-over par 222 thanks to a 1-over par on Tuesday. Junior Ben Fernandez also made a giant leap up the leaderboard, jumping 19 spots to a tie for 35th at 7-over par 223 due to an even-par final round.
Tournament host Michigan State claimed first place at 12-under par 852, as the Spartans led during all three rounds. Iowa State finished in second place, six strokes behind Michigan State and 10 strokes ahead of the Wildcats. Michigan State's Donnie Trosper took home the individual crown at 10-under par 206.
K-State returns to action March 16-17 in the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular in Howie in the Hills, Florida.
