Wildcats Fall to Jayhawks in Regular-Season Finale

LAWRENCE, Kan.?– In its regular-season finale, K-State dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 20 Kansas Saturday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (12-10, 2-7 Big 12) saw their two-match winning streak come to an end while KU (16-4, 7-2 Big 12) won its fifth straight matched and finished the regular season with a perfect 11-0 record at home.
Kansas picked up the doubles point as No. 3 Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia defeated K-State's Margot Decker and Anna Turco, 6-2, at the top doubles spot in the lineup.
Freshman Ioana Gheorghita and sophomore Maria Linares lost on Court 3 to Maria Toran Ribes and Malkia Ngounoue, 6-3.
Freshman Karine-Marion Job and junior Ines Mesquita competed against No. 73 Anastasia Rychagova and Sonia Smagina, but went unfinished with the score at 4-3.
In single action, Turco pushed 96th-ranked Koch to a third-set tiebreaker before falling 6-2, 2-6, 11-9, at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Turco saw her five-match winning streak come to an end.
From the No. 3 position, Decker fought before losing to Plobrug Pilpuech, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). Job also fell in a tiebreaker in the second set, as she fell to Smagina at the fourth position, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Gheorghita dropped a straight-set decision to Toran Ribes at the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-2, while Mesquita lost to Khmelnitckaia from the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-0.
At the No. 1 spot, Linares fell to No. 26, Rychagova, 6-2, 6-1. Linares is now 1-5 against ranked opponents this season.
K-State's all-time record against KU is 14-45 and 6-21 in Lawrence. The Cats are now 2-7 this season when facing a ranked team.
The Wildcats will now prepare for the Big 12 Championship that begins on Thursday at Jayhawk Tennis Center.
