MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team will look to resume its impressive spring season on Saturday and Sunday during the 2019 Hawkeye Invitational, played on the par-71, 6,884-yard Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa.
The two-day tournament consists of 36 holes on Saturday with an 9 a.m., shotgun start, followed by Sunday's final round at 8:30 a.m.
The Wildcats enter the event with four-consecutive finishes in the top three, including a victory in the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular last month. In its latest tournament, K-State recorded a second-place finish at the Tiger Invitational on April 8-9, which was highlighted by a second-place finish by Jacob Eklund, his third-straight finish in the top five.
At last year's Hawkeye Invitational, the Wildcats shot 11-over par 587 in a rained-shorted two rounds to finish in third. Jeremy Gandon, who was a junior at the time, claimed the individual title by carding an 8-under par 136.
"We are looking forward to competing in Iowa this weekend," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It's another tournament and course that we are familiar with. The layout is relatively straightforward, however the rough looks to be a little longer than it has been in the past. The keys for us are to drive it well and stay below the hole as much as possible."
Junior Ben Fernandez will maintain No. 1 slot in the scoring lineup, followed by Eklund. Gandon secures the No. 3 spot, while seniors Roland Massimino and JC Campbell follow. Freshman Will Hopkins will join the club and compete as an individual.
K-State enters the event ranked 63rd in the nation according to Golfstat. The Wildcats will face a strong field, including DePaul, Eastern Michigan, No. 27 Illinois, Indiana, No. 43 Iowa, No. 29 Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oral Roberts, South Dakota State and UMKC.
