K-State Rally Falters in Fourth Quarter
Jan 19, 2020 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State was able to pull within four points on three occasions in the fourth quarter on Sunday afternoon against Texas at Bramlage Coliseum, but the Longhorns held back the charge to secure a 71-63 win.
"I thought from our perspective, the turnovers were the most costly part of the day," said K-State head coach Jeff Mittie about the Wildcats' 24 turnovers. "We could never really sustain any offense just because of our inconsistency just to be able to control the ball.
"You look at the stat sheet and you say we outscored them on turnovers, we outscored them in the paint, we outscored them on fastbreaks. These were things that you would think would be pretty good but at the end of the day, our turnovers and that eight different players hit threes for them today, so give them credit for knocking those down, but I think we were our own worst enemy with the turnovers."
Texas (11-6, 3-2 Big 12) dashed out to an 11-4 lead, as the Wildcats opened the game 0-of-7 from the field. K-State (7-8, 1-3 Big 12) climbed back into the contest, as Christianna Carr scored seven straight points to close the deficit to two, 13-11, with 3:36 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Wildcats would remain close with the Longhorns in the first quarter. Texas would pull ahead by five, 18-13, but layups from Angela Harris and Cymone Goodrich ended the quarter with K-State trailing by one, 18-17, at the end of the frame.
The Longhorns increased their lead to seven, 28-21, but the Wildcats pulled back to within two, 28-26. Harris converted a floater in the lane, then Harris found Savannah Simmons in transition for a 3-pointer at the top of the key with 4:58 remaining in the second quarter.
Texas would close out the first half with a 7-0 run to hold a 35-26 lead.
The Longhorns would increase its lead to as many as 13, 50-37, with three minutes to play in the third quarter. K-State ended the third stanza on a 9-2 run to bring the margin to six, 52-46, entering the fourth quarter.
Simmons buried her second 3-pointer of the afternoon to start the rally at 2:33 of the third. A 3-pointer from Carr after a Harris free throw brought the Wildcats to withing eight. Laura Macke then converted a pair of free throws with under a minute to play to bring the score to 52-46.
A layup from Ayoka Lee to begin the fourth quarter pulled K-State within four, 62-58. Texas rebuilt its advantage to 12, 60-48, with an 8-0 scoring burst. K-State answered with six straight points to within six, 60-54.
After a timeout, Cymone Goodrich registered a steal and fastbreak layup with 4:23 remaining to bring the Wildcats back to within four, 62-58.
Texas would recover for a seven-point edge, 65-58, but a layup from Lee and a three-pointer from Harris with 1:01 to play closed the Wildcats within four, 67-63. The Longhorns were able to close out the Wildcats from the foul line for the final margin.
Harris led the Wildcats with 16 points, four assists and two steals, while Lee tallied 12 points and nine rebounds, one steal and a block. Carr chipped in with 10 points, three rebounds and two steals.
Texas was led by Sug Sutton with 16 points, while Celeste Taylor came off the bench to add 15.
K-State shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the field, including a 5-of-26 (.192) effort from 3- point range. Texas carded a 38.7 percent effort (24-of-62) and were 11-of-27 (.407) from beyond the arc. K-State had the edge on the boards, 38-36.
Kansas State will travel to Ames, Iowa, on Wednesday to face Iowa State. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday's game will be streamed on Cyclones.TV and can be heard on the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com.
What They Said
JEFF MITTIE, K-STATE HEAD COACH
Opening statement...
"I thought from our perspective, the turnovers were the most costly part of the day. We can never really sustain any offense just because of our inconsistency just to be able to control the ball. You look at the stat sheet and you say we outscored them on turnovers, we outscored them in the paint, we outscored them on fastbreaks. These were things that you would think would be pretty good but at the end of the day, our turnovers and that eight different players hit threes for them today, so give them credit for knocking those down, but I think we were our own worst enemy with the turnovers."
On the last couple of games…
"This is the first time we have had Peyton (Williams)Â struggle as much as she did. That's the first time we've had that, and that obviously becomes other players stepping up. I thought Angela (Harris) did some really good things. I thought our bench played better today. That was the highlight, I think. Cymone Goodrich played better today, Savvy Simmons did some good things and Jaseaun Beard had a nice stretch in the fourth. I think we are fighting and doing those things. Before I didn't necessarily think we were handling situations. I think those are things that are improving. In today's particular game, I thought we missed opportunities. We had three or four chances down low on out of bounds plays that we didn't quite execute as well. The turnovers, this was a season high, so that's a problem."
On Texas' 21 steals…
"They are flat taking it from us. I thought they were playing quick, and I thought we were indecisive in those times. I don't think I've ever seen that in my six years here. Give Texas credit for flying around and doing those things. They were really swarming the posts and quick to the action we ran, but we have to do those things better."
On what was encouraging from today's game…
"We had a chance to win the game today when we didn't do some things well. We have to shore those things up and if we shore those things up we'll have a lot of opportunities left, so that would be the encouraging part. It was good to see Laura Macke play well today. And Laura is one that our team knows, it's important to Laura. She cares. It matters to her. She feels bad when she doesn't play well. It was good to see her have some good plays. Cymone has not played as well as she's capable of coming off of the injury. It's good to see her play well. I think it's good to see our group have more players playing well. That was the key to Texas' victory today was that they had eight players knock three pointers down, so it's encouraging to me to see that we are having more players play well."
AYOKA LEE, REDSHIRT FRESHMAN CENTER
On the Texas bigs being better than Oklahoma State's...
"I wouldn't say so because I think OSU, a lot of their offense wanted to get it in to their bigs more but I think in our zone we did a good job of closing off the lob on the back side and trapping the short corner because we knew they weren't great in the short corner. I definitely think it was a group effort, getting turnovers when they passed it in to their bigs and getting stops down there, but I don't think it was as big of a challenge as OSU."
ANGELA HARRIS, SENIOR GUARD
On getting within four points late in the game...
"I never think we're out of a game whether we're down four, down 15, 20, I don't ever think we're out of a game. You all saw we came back against Oklahoma State when we were down 15. We came back against West Virginia when we were down 18, so I don't think this team ever thinks we're out of a game."
KAREN ASTON, TEXAS HEAD COACH
On her thoughts following the game...
"Any win that you have in the Big 12 on the road is a big one. Particularly for our team, it has been a struggle here in Manhattan. We were able to withstand the runs and have the mental toughness of being able to finish the game and some plays. The most important thing for us is getting out of here with a win, and we did that."
On facing K-State's bigs…
"We did a very admirable job on their bigs. We were a little lackadaisical to start the game with our ball pressure and what the game plan was, but again, I thought we did a really good job on Peyton (Williams). We gave her a big help which was necessary, but it may have turned into some open shots for their guards. We can play better, but we also played a team that did not want to lose at home and had a lot of urgency."
On the offensive performance…
"In the first half we over-penetrated because we are a penetrating team, and we had a lot of turnovers due to penetration. When we're trying to force the ball inside we took what was available, and when we did not we turned the ball over too much. We will look at that, but I thought we made pretty good decisions and shot the ball well."
On doubling Peyton Williams and Ayoka Lee…
"The way K-State runs its offense, it is difficult to get a double. Ball pressure helped because it bought time for our bigs to get around. For the most part, with the exception of fouls in the third quarter, we were trying to pressure the ball. It was necessary to put pressure on the ball in order to make their timing off so we could buy time from a post perspective."
On doubling Peyton Williams and Ayoka Lee…
"For us, it is a lot about us. Can you focus on the things you do well and can control? Our team does understand that it does not matter who we play, it is a 40-minute game. Having a lead does not mean anything in this league. We expect runs no matter who it is, because nobody is gonna hand a game to you in league play. Our group understands that and our handling runs pretty well, but the value of our possession has to be more important."
"I thought from our perspective, the turnovers were the most costly part of the day," said K-State head coach Jeff Mittie about the Wildcats' 24 turnovers. "We could never really sustain any offense just because of our inconsistency just to be able to control the ball.
