K-State Rally Stalls in Fourth Quarter at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa – K-State used a late third quarter rally to eliminate a 13-point Iowa State lead, but the Cyclones stopped the comeback to hold off the Wildcats, 73-59, on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum. The loss ended K-State's Big 12 road winning streak at a school record-tying six games.

K-State (7-9, 1-4 Big 12) built an 8-7 lead, as both teams struggled from the field going 7-of-19 in the first six minutes. Christianna Carr finished a contest drive with a layup at 4:40 of the first quarter for the one-point edge.

Iowa State (11-6, 3-3 Big 12) would end the first frame on a 10-2 run, including a pair of 3-point field goals, to hold a 17-10 lead.

K-State was able to pull within two points, 22-20, midway through the second quarter as Carr buried a 3-pointer in transition. The Wildcats were able to close the gap by holding Iowa State to a 1-of-9 stretch for four-minute stretch.

With a 9-3 run to end the second quarter, Iowa State held a 36-25 lead at the half.

The Cyclones would build its lead to 13, 42-29, on an Ashley Joens layup with 6:27 to play. K-State would chip away at the deficit, using a 12-5 run to end the third quarter and pull to within four, 49-45, heading to the fourth quarter. Cymone Goodrich and Peyton Williams scored 10 of the 12 points during the rally.

Williams finished a jumper in the lane to begin the fourth quarter and cut the Iowa State lead to two, 49-47. The Cyclones would rebuild its lead to six, 58-52, with 5:02 remaining but Jasauen Beard hit a runner  in the lane to bring the Wildcats back within four, 58-54.

Iowa State went to Joens, the leading scorer in the Big 12, and she delivered with five points to increase the Cyclones' lead to nine, 63-54, and force a K-State timeout.

Williams would score five points to bring K-State within six, 65-59, with 2:05 remaining but the Cyclones were able to keep the Wildcats at arm's length to close out the game.

Williams led the Wildcats with 15 points and nine rebounds. With her 15 points, Williams moved into

Ayoka Lee chipped in with 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. This was Lee's 12th straight game in double figures. Harris added 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds. This was Harris's eighth time in double figures in the last nine games.

Iowa State was led by Joens with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Rae Johnson added a career-high 19 points and eight assists off the bench.

Kansas State shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) from the field, but were 2-of-14 from beyond the arc. Iowa State finished 42.9 percent (27-of-63) and were 9-of-33 from three. The Cyclones held the edge on the boards, 40-30.

Kansas State returns to Bramlage Coliseum to host Oklahoma on Saturday at 2 p.m. Saturday's game is Dollar Day, as all general admission tickets and select concession items are available for $1.
