K-State’s Turner, Werremeyer Earn Big 12 Weekly Honors

Nov 03, 2020 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – For the first time two K-State players collected Big 12 weekly honors in the same week, as defender Shae Turner was named the Big 12 Defender of the Week while goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer earned her second Big 12 Freshman of the Week honor following K-State's 2-0 win at Iowa State to set a school mark for Big 12 wins in a season.

Turner is the second Wildcat to earn Big 12 Defender of the Week honors and the first since Miranda Larkin on October 10, 2017. Werremeyer is the only player in the Big 12 this season to garner two Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors. She is the first Wildcat to earn two Big 12 weekly honors in the same season.

A sophomore from Kansas City, Missouri, Turner figured heavily into the win at Iowa State. Turner played the full 90 minutes and assisted on the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute by sending a pass from midfield to Brookelynn Entz. It was the first assist of Turner's career.

In the first half, Turner put her head on a free kick and narrowly missed the far post.

Turner also anchored K-State's backline to its first road shut of the season and the first league road shutout since 2017. Turner helped K-State hold Iowa State to six shots on goal and just one of those attempts inside the 18-yard box.

For the season, Turner is fourth on the team in minutes played and ranks second on the team with a career-high three points.

Werremeyer pocketed the second shutout and win of her career to help end K-State's 14-game Big 12 road losing streak. Werremeyer is the first K-State freshman goalkeeper to register a road win.

Werremeyer pocketed six saves, including four in the second half, on 20 total shots faced to secure her second win of the season.

The product of Blue Springs, Missouri, is the third player in program history with two or more career shutouts. She is the second Wildcat goalkeeper to register a Big 12 road shutout, joining Larkin's 1-0 win at Kansas in 2017.

For the season, Werremeyer leads the Wildcats with 29 saves and a .674 save percentage. She has three matches with five or more saves this season.

K-State will close out the fall 2020 season with its first-ever match in the month of November. The Wildcats will host Texas Tech at Buser Family Park on Friday, November 13, at 6 p.m. Friday's match will be Senior Night, as the Wildcats will honor its seven seniors in a post-match ceremony.
