K-State’s Sibbing Stops Another PK, Wildcats Drop Weekend Finale

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Arizona State scored a pair of first half goals and were prevented from adding a third in the second half as K-State goalkeeper Maddie Sibbing stopped her second penalty kick of the season. The Sun Devils would depart Buser Family Park with a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Arizona State (7-2-2, 2-1-0 Big 12) took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. Peyton Marcisz pounced on a loose ball near the top of K-State's 18-yard box and finished at the right post from 16 yards.
- The Sun Devils upped their lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute. Marcisz played a combination with Kierra Blundell. Blundell scored inside the left post from inside 15 yards.
- In the 73rd minute, Sibbing made a diving save on Blundell's penalty kick attempt to keep K-State (5-2-4, 0-2-1) within striking distance.
- Sibbing is the first K-State goalkeeper to stop two penalty kicks in both a season and a career.
- The Wildcats outshot the Sun Devils, 16-10, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal.

- Head coach Colleen Corbin is 34-32-21 (.511) in her five career seasons as a head coach. She owns a 12-8-9 (.569) mark in her two seasons at K-State.

- Rilyn Rintoul attempted six shots with four on goal. She is tied for third in school history for career shots on goal with 37.
- Allison Marshall attempted two shots with one on goal. Marshall is seventh in program history for career shots on goal with 32.
- Rintoul, Braswell and junior goalkeeper Maddie Sibbing each made their 29th straight starts at K-State.
- Sophomore midfielder Langley Mayers, junior defender Chloe Dillbeck and junior defender Emerson DeLuca made their 20th career starts.

FROM THE HEAD COACH

On her takeaways from the offense after outshooting Arizona State 16-10…
"I think we generated enough chances to win the game. We got ourselves in dangerous areas enough to win the game, but that's not how the game goes right. The better team doesn't always win. The team that generates the most chances doesn't always win. And ASU was super opportunistic with the moments that they did generate, and they capitalized. To me, that's the story of the game, and at this level in this conference, it's all about margins, and those margins are super small. Defensively, I didn't think we were good enough at all in the first half, and I think we changed and we adapted, and we were better in the second half. But again, against quality opponents in one of the best conferences in the country, you don't have the luxury of playing one good half of soccer."

On if the scoreline reflected how the team played…
"I don't necessarily think so. I think we created some really dangerous chances. I think we were really dynamic. I think we got into dangerous areas. I think again, it took us about 35 minutes to get into the soccer game, and that's way too long. So I would say that ASU outplayed us for sure, at least in the first 35. And again, they were opportunistic of the moments that they generated, and I think a lot of that is self-inflicted on our end. I think we were super uncharacteristic in the way we defended, and the way that we pressed or didn't defend or didn't press, and so that's really disappointing because at the end of the day, tactics only matter if the culture and the grit and the energy and the belief are there, and I didn't think that we looked like ourselves in the beginning of the half."

On evaluating the two goals from Arizona State…
"I'll have to go back and look at them. It's never just one person's moment. There are always multiple things happening across the field that impact a goal, but I think it felt soft. A lot of it felt soft, and that's again not who we want to be, and not who we have, not the kind of program we've developed into being. And so, just really a big bummer to feel like those goals are coming out of uncharacteristic moments for us collectively as a team."

On what you saw from Maddie Sibbing…
"She had a stellar save. Maddie's a stellar goalkeeper. The message to the team after that is that you need to use that moment and leverage that, and generate goals, and go get yourself back in the game. And again, I think we were pushing, and I think we got into the final third, but obviously just didn't capitalize on the moments we were creating."

On what you're going to focus on going into the next game…
"I think the team knows collectively, top to bottom, we're going to have to be better than whatever today was. BYU is a really good team. Every team in this conference is a really good team, and that environment is one of the most challenging environments to go and play on the road in. So, again, our identity is going to have to be there, and soccer hopefully will follow. But the biggest focus is going to be making sure that who we are in our grit, defensive presence, physical mentality, like all of that has to be there because otherwise, the soccer, the tactical, all that doesn't matter."
