FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Colleen Corbin
Opening statement…Â
"I'm disappointed for the team, disappointed for the staff, disappointed for the group collectively. I think the way that our team prepared for this game was intentional and thoughtful. I think we did a really good job limiting them in the moments that they're typically very effective. We got into moments where I think we could have been more dangerous, and I think that was the deciding factor in the game: they capitalized on the opportunities and were more dangerous from the middle third to the final third than we were, and unfortunately, like that feels like it's happened a handful of times in the last few games. So defensively, we will continue to try to find ways to not give up goals, and offensively, we're going to continue to find ways to score more goals because that's how the game goes."Â
Â
On what broke down defensively in most plays…Â
"I'm honestly not really sure. I need to go back and watch it. I know they're really dangerous from wide services, and Caroline Castans, who plays out there, is a very talented player, and we know that, and we respect her, and we respect the program. But I'm not 100% sure, honestly. I know that we have to deny those opportunities out wide. We have to try to prevent those services from coming off and make sure that we stay matched up in the midfields, but it was a transition game, and that was definitely what those moments were."Â
Â
On what KU changed tactically in the second half…Â
"I think they were just a little bit more risky, putting balls in behind in the flank and trying to catch us in higher positions. And like I said, that's their MO. They're very effective and good at that. And I think just came out with a little bit more energy to start the half and were able to capitalize on."Â
Â
On who stood out individually…Â
"McKinnan Braswell continues to be an engine for us. Her work rate is never in question. She's all over the field, and I think other people feed off of that energy. So we just have to continue to find ways to collectively be on the same page altogether, because, like you said, I think there were a lot of individual efforts and performances, but trying to get those to all be cohesive is going to be the name of the game."Â
Â
On what message are you giving your team before Sunday…Â
"Just to continue to believe that we're good enough, because I do. And what I told them in the circle is that when you decide to do something that's never been done and to step into a program where we are trying to move the needle to places that it's never been, you have to expect hardship. You have to expect resistance. You have to expect it to be challenging, and that's what we're in right now. And we can't be scared or afraid or timid or hesitant to continue to step into it. It's the only way through. And again, when you choose to lean into a higher calling, there's going to be hardship, and so that's where we're at, and we have to just keep moving forward."Â
Â
On how you stop a result like this carrying over to the next match…Â
"Baylor's a really talented team. They're really good at soccer. They move the ball really well. They've got great athletes, but so do we. And so we just have to make sure that we're organized and prepared and focused for the next match and to not allow what went down this evening to affect the next performance."
