K-State Wins 200th Big 12 Game with Team Effort

Feb 26, 2020 | Women's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Of the 10 K-State players to see the floor on Wednesday night, nine recorded at least one point and eight hauled in a rebound as the Wildcats went wire-to-wire to defeat Iowa State in Bramlage Coliseum, 60-51.

With the victory K-State (14-12, 8-7 Big 12) secured the program's 200th Big 12 regular season win since the start of the league in the 1996-97 season.

K-State led by as many as six on two instances in the opening quarter, jumping out to a 6-0 lead to begin the game and then an 11-5 advantage after an Emily Ebert jumper with 3:58 to play. Iowa State (15-11, 7-8 Big 12) pulled to within two, 13-11, at the conclusion of the opening frame.

The Wildcats held the Cyclones without a point for over six and a half minutes to begin the second quarter. K-State held Iowa State to a 0-of-10 effort from the field in those six and a half minutes, as the Wildcats built a 19-11 lead.

K-State would hold a 25-17 lead at the break, as Laura Macke came off the bench with four points in the final 2:50 of the quarter and Angela Harris finished a fast break layup.

In the third quarter, Harris started a 13-1 run for the Wildcats with seven straight points. Jasauen Beard then capped the run with a free throw and a 3-pointer to give the Wildcats a 40-24 lead with 2:14 remaining.

In total in the third, the Wildcats would outscore the Cyclones, 19-14. K-State would hold a 44-31 lead at the end of the quarter after Harris buried a jumper with 38 seconds remaining.

Iowa State narrowed the game to six, 47-41, to force an early fourth quarter K-State timeout with 7:38 remaining. K-State would rebuild the lead to nine, 50-41, after three points from Ayoka Lee.

The Cyclones would close to with five, 53-48, with 4:52 to play, but Savannah Simmons buried a 3-pointer and Peyton Williams hit a pull up jumper to give the Wildcats a 58-48 lead with 2:13 remaining. Defensively, K-State held Iowa State without a made field goal for the final 4:51 of the game.

Of the nine players to score, three reached double figures as Harris, Lee and Williams each scored 11 points. Lee secured a school record sixth straight double by adding 12 rebounds and four blocks to her line. For the season, Lee owns 17 double-doubles and tied the school record for double-doubles in a season.

With her 11 points, Williams became the 12th player in program history with 1,500 or more career points as she has a career total of 1,504. She also pulled in six rebounds and is the third player in school history with 950 or more career rebounds.

Harris finished with a diverse stat line by adding six assists, a team season-high six steals and four rebounds.

For the night, K-State shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52) which included a second half performance of 50.0 percent (13-of-26). The Wildcats held the Cyclones to a 32.1 percent (18-of-56) effort for the night including a first half effort of 22.6 percent (7-of-31).

The Wildcats won the battle of the boards for the 17th time this season, outrebounding Iowa State 38-33.

With the win, K-State secured the 27th winning month of February in program history.

K-State will begin its final two-game road trip of the season on Saturday, as the Wildcats travel to (2/2) Baylor for a 6 p.m., tip-off. Saturday's game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and available on the K-State Sports Network, for free at kstatesports.com and on the K-State Sports app.

JEFF MITTIE, K-STATE HEAD COACH
Opening statement...
"Well, it was a grind it out game. Our defense was really on point for most of the night, probably 36 of the 40 possessions. We really wanted to defend the arc better. The first half was excellent. The second half, they knocked some down."

On switching up the rotations...
"Ironically, the decision was a little bit that there were shorter stretches that need to be played by people. Jasauen Beard is coming off being fairly sick, and Savannah Simmons has been fairly sick, so we only had six players in practice yesterday. I felt like Beard was winded and thought her and Savannah were a good rotation at the time. They had been switching on and off of picking up full which can take some energy out of you."

On the defensive gameplan…
"We wanted to be more committed to the arc. There were a couple things we tried to do by picking up full, which was extending our defense so they did not get settled with the ball. We were too soft on the pickup last time when I went back on film. I thought Beard did an excellent job of getting us off on the right start. We wanted to move everybody up about five or six feet. Our group was pretty good there. The one thing I felt like they had success at was going in at Ayoka (Lee), which we were okay with as long as we were protecting the arch and not giving up there."

On Peyton Williams guarding Ashley Joens…
"I told Peyton (Williams) this needed to be the best defensive game of her career. I don't know if it was the best but she did pretty dang good. I felt like she had good awareness and did a good job of holding her ground on Ashley Joens. Joens is really hard to guard. You look at her numbers, and she can score at all levels. Peyton held her ground pretty good tonight."

On the offensive numbers and flow of the game…
"You have to look at this in perspective of the game it was. I don't know if it was an off game, but I think it was a low possession game. Our guards demonstrated excellent discipline to not rush things. You can hear the crowd almost groan when people were open to shoot it. We only got 52 shots. That is a low possession game. They were committed to packing it into the zone and we wanted to utilize as much clock as we could. The last 10 seconds we wanted the guards to be aggressive. I thought it was a pretty good balance. What we weren't able to do was get in transition as much as we hoped, but Iowa State was committed to not letting us do that."

ANGELA HARRIS, SENIOR GUARD
On the steals and defensive pressure…
"They run a lot of stuff through Joens, number 24. When you're guarding off the ball, the guards weren't moving a lot. Most of the time, I was just watching where Joens was and watching the point guard to see where her eyes were. It was pretty easy from there."

On deciding between shooting or keeping the ball moving…
"Early in the shot clock, not really because as a team we've found our identity later on in the season. We know we're trying to get the ball inside, whether it's a pass in to the post or a drive to the rim from a guard. Later in the shot clock, under five seconds, it has to go up and we pray it goes in or that Yokie (Ayoka Lee) rebounds the ball."

On knocking down shots from the outside…
"I thought Savvy (Savannah Simmons) hit a big three for us when they were making a run. I skipped it out to her, and that was a huge shot. She's probably our best three point shooter right now, so I'm glad she hit that shot."

PEYTON WILLIAMS, SENIOR FORWARD
On the balanced offense…
"Coach Mittie said we had 13 bench points, and that was huge. It was so clearly a team effort in all categories. It's exciting to have a win like that."

On if Iowa State did anything different defensively…
"Different, no. People hold me all the time. I just got mad about it."

On defensive rebounding with a lot of long rebounds…
"You gotta trust your guards, too. You gotta trust that everyone is doing their job with rebounding and boxing out especially. You try to move your players under and allow your guards to move a little bit and then just get ready to run them down."

BILL FENNELLY, IOWA STATE HEAD COACH

Opening statement…
"Certainly first of all, I want to congratulate Kansas State. I thought they played really well. Obviously, their inside game is really, really tough to handle. The play of Angela Harris has been really big for their team moving forward. I thought she played great. Senior guards are amazing. They're a gift from God and when you don't have one, you're going through hell half the time. For our team I would say, it's tough to win in this league when you're playing with one player. Ashley Joens had to pretty much carry the load tonight, but the kids competed, cut it to five late in the game. We're trying. We're just not as efficient as we need to be right now."

On if the slow start from the three point line was due to Kansas State…
"I've always been one of those people that says it's a little bit of both. You can't discard defense, but I think the first four we took, I might have been the closest person to them. They guarded a few, but that's the nature of the game. It's important to our game because we don't have the point guard play that's going to break you down from the bounce. We don't have the size, and certainly when Kristin Scott got hurt that changed us dramatically, but 7-29 is not going to get it done."

On defending Ayoka Lee and Peyton Williams...
"I thought we defended them OK. They're averaging double-doubles for a reason. The one thing about the women's game is Ashley Joens is 5'11 and they're 6'4. You're not going to out jump them half the time. I thought we made a couple mistakes late in the shot clock. Their offense is run the clock down, jam it in, jam it in, jam it in, and we left a couple shooters late in the clock. They didn't hit a bunch of threes, but they hit some big ones. I thought Harris beat us off the bounce a couple of times late. Defense was not the issue for us tonight. Offensively, we were not great."

On turnovers...
"This is game 26 for us. It's been 26 games of the same thing. We are not a very good ball handling team, and that has been a struggle for us all year. The scouting report was wherever number 3 is, you better be careful because she's going after the ball. She made some big steals. We cut it and she picked us a couple times. She's a great defender. She played really well. I don't want to discount that, but it's kind of been our team all year unfortunately."
