Track and Field Fills Up Academic All-Big 12 Teams with 34 Selections
May 06, 2020 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – A total of 34 members of the Kansas State track and field teams were selected to the 2020 Academic All-Big 12 teams, the conference announced Wednesday (May 6).
Â
Among the 34 selections were seven individuals who achieved 4.0 grade point averages during the 2019-20 academic year, including Ethan Powell, Parker McCafferty, Taylor Smith, Alex Ferguson, Cayli Hume, Kassidy Johnson and Cara Melgares. Ferguson, Hume, Johnson, Melgares and Powell all repeated their 4.0 GPA efforts from the 2018-19 season.
Â
It was an even split for both teams in terms of representation for each group as the total number of men and women selected was 17 individuals each.
Â
The Wildcats tallied a combined 23 first-team selections and 11 second-team selections for the academic award. K-State improved the number of members from last year's accolade by three, as the team posted 31 individuals on both conference academic teams during the 2018-19 campaign.
Â
Both academic teams for each gender equated to 384 total student-athletes that were honored around the Big 12, with 152 making up the men's side and 232 residing in the women's chart.Â
Â
Those who earned spots on the conference's academic first team put together an overall GPA of 3.20 or higher.
Â
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshman and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Seniors who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Â
Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, K-State ended the 2019-20 indoor season at the Big 12 Indoor Championship in Ames, Iowa. The Wildcats ended their two-day competition at the Lied Recreation Center with three individual champions and 26-podium performances.Â
