Cats Stumble in Big 12 Road Opener

Oct 01, 2021 | Volleyball

NORMAN, Okla. – K-State took the opening set Friday in its first Big 12 road contest, but the Oklahoma Sooners rallied for a four-set win at McCasland Field House, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20.

Aliyah Carter led all players with 16 kills while Sydney Bolding registered a season-high 12 with a .500 hitting percentage. Mackenzie Morris picked up a match-high 21 digs and Jacque Smith added a season-best 18.

K-State (9-5, 0-3 Big 12) was held under a .200 hitting percentage for the fourth time this season, as the Wildcats have dropped three straight matches to begin conference play. Oklahoma (7-7, 1-2 Big 12) totaled a dozen team blocks, with six apiece coming from Tyler Alcorn and Paige Anderson.

"I think we are better than we played, and I think we let an opportunity get away from us," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "Road matches are hard in the Big 12, everybody's good, and it gets tougher when you go on the road. We've got to coach them better, have them better prepared and they've got to get themselves better prepared. We've all got to take some responsibility to make sure when we go into a match, we are firing on all cylinders. And we just simply weren't tonight. Credit to Oklahoma, I thought they played really well."

Holly Bonde and Haley Warner each added nine kills for the Wildcat offense. Setter Teana Adams-Kaonohi handed out 49 assists to go with seven digs.

K-State totaled nine team blocks in limiting the Sooners to a .234 efficiency. Bolding, Kadye Fernholz and Warner each tallied four blocks. Fernholz also picked up seven kills and three digs.

Neither side was able to put together a scoring run longer than three points in the opening set, but the Cats broke a 21-21 tie by scoring four of the final six points scored to take a one-set lead. Carter and Warner both put down four kills while Bolding and Fernholz each added a pair. K-State used three team blocks to hold the Sooners to a .204 efficiency.

The Sooners evened the match behind four team blocks, limiting the Cats to a match-low .067 hitting percentage. Oklahoma strung together an early 5-1 scoring run before an 8-4 spurt created a 23-17 advantage. K-State was led with three kills from both Carter and Warner.

K-State fended off three set-point opportunities in the third before a kill from Davison handed OU with a 2-1 edge. Oklahoma used an early 9-4 run, including stretches of four and three unanswered points, in opening an 11-7 lead and forcing a Wildcat timeout.

The Cats came within two points at 22-20 following a kill from Fernholz and were within a point after fighting off three set-point tries, a stretch that included kills from Bolding and Bonde. Bolding paced the Wildcat offense with six kills on seven swings (.714).

Wilson tallied seven of Oklahoma's 14 kills in the fourth set, as she hit .455 while her team hit .385 in closing out the match. The OU defense picked up four more blocks to hold the Cats to a .182 mark. A seven-point Sooner run early in the frame gave OU a lead it would not relinquish.

Carter's fourth-set stat line showed seven kills at a .278 efficiency while Bonde picked up four on six attempts. Bolding added two kills while also adding a pair of blocks.

The Sooners had three players reach double-digit kills, led by 15 kills from Savannah Davison and Megan Wilson. Anderson contributed 12 kills while hitting a team-best .429.

Oklahoma setter Peyton Dunn produced a double-double with her 48 assists and 12 digs. Libero Callie Kemohah had a team-high 19 digs while Sam Anthony chipped in 17.

The Wildcats have lost their last three matches in Norman, last winning in 2017.

K-State and Oklahoma wrap up the two-day series Saturday at McCasland Field House at 4 p.m. The match will be broadcast on Bally Sports Oklahoma and Rob Voelker will have the call online at K-StateSports.com/Watch.
