K-State Sets Single-Season Records Against (11) TCU

Oct 22, 2021 | Soccer

FORT WORTH, Texas – Bolstered by a pair of second half goals to set new school records, K-State soccer looked to extend its unbeaten streak against ranked opponents to three and spring a road upset but 11th-ranked TCU used a pair of goals after the 65th minute to rally to defeat the Wildcats, 3-2, at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium on Friday night.

With its two goals on Friday night, K-State's season total for goals improved to 20 which set a new school record for goals in a season. The previous mark of 18 was set in the 2017 season.

The Wildcats finished with a total of six points on Friday night to increase its overall points this season to 60. This season's total established a new school record for points in a season, surpassing the previous mark of 55 set in the 2017 season.

"The goals and points records show the evolution in the program and the overall growth of the talent of the players," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about the records. "Being able to set records is really a contribution of all the players working hard, believing, continuing to push forward and trying to get better."

Trailing by a goal after the first half, K-State (6-9-2, 1-5-2 Big 12) squared the match at one in the 49th minute. Junior Marisa Weichel scored her sixth goal of the season and her first in Big 12 action after intercepting a TCU pass. She raced to the net and finished past TCU goalkeeper, Lauren Kellett.

K-State gained the lead, 2-1, in the 58th minute. The Wildcats intercepted a Horned Frogs pass and quickly countered with Weichel finding freshman Adah Anderson. Anderson then relayed the ball to senior Brookelynn Entz.

Entz did the rest, finishing from the top of the 18 for her first goal in Big 12 play this season and her second overall. This was the first lead for the Wildcats in 16 meetings against ranked opponents.

Entz, a 2020 All-Big 12 First Team selection, is the first player in program history to score two or more goals in five straight seasons. With her goal, Entz surpassed the 50-point mark for her career (51). She needs one goal to reach 20 for her career.

Weichel's three-point night tied for third in school history for points in a Big 12 match and is the first player other than Entz to reach this single-match mark. Overall this season, Weichel owns 13 points which ranks second for a single-season in the six-season history of K-State soccer.

With her assist on the Entz goal, Anderson recorded the first of her career. Anderson is the 11th Wildcat this season to hand out an assist, establishing a new program record for players with an assist in a season.

TCU (14-2-1, 6-1-1 Big 12), the defending Big 12 champions, recovered to tie the match at two apiece in the 66th minute. Gracie Brian scored on a loose ball inside the K-State six-yard box.

The Horned Frogs then scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 68th minute, as Camryn Lancaster finished a pass from Brandi Peterson.

Dibbini has been encouraged by K-State's results against United Soccer Coaches top-25 ranked opponents this season, in which the Wildcats played to a pair of draws in Manhattan and fell by a goal on the road.

"I mean we're closing the gap that's for sure if you look at the results from year to year. Some of these matches have gotten away from us but to do it on the road against the top-10 defending champs, possibly front runner now for the Big 12 title shows a lot of progress on our part. It shows a lot of character on the way we continue to fight and the way we continue to give a good effort like we did tonight."

The Wildcats will play their final regular season home game on Thursday, October 28, as K-State will host Iowa State at 7 p.m. Thursday's match is Senior Night, as K-State will honor seniors Emily Crain, Entz, Taylor Gardner and Maguire Sullivan in a post-match ceremony.

Thursday's match will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
