Thornhill, Werremeyer Collect Big 12 Weekly Honors

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Following its overtime win in the Sunflower Showdown, K-State received a pair of weekly honors from the Big 12 Conference as Caylee Thornhill was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week while Alaina Werremeyer was named the Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week.

Thornhill is the second Wildcat in school history to earn Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors, joining Brookleynn Entz who earned the distinction in October of 2019. In addition to the Big 12 honor, Thornhill was also named as an honorable mention selection to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week.

Werremeyer is the second K-State goalkeeper to earn the league's Goalkeeper of the Week honor, joining Peyton Pearson who earned her honor in November of 2020.

Thornhill, a redshirt sophomore from Lenexa, Kansas, tallied her first career game-winning goal and the second overtime game-winning goal in program history with a left-footed strike in the 99th minute of the first overtime. Making her first start of the season, Thornhill registered a season-high 66 minutes of action and tallied three shots with one on goal.

For the season, Thornhill is tied for second on the team with two goals and is tied for third on the team with four points. She has 13 shots with four on goal.

Werremeyer backstopped the first Big 12 overtime win in program history with a career night.

The sophomore from Blue Springs, Missouri, registered a career-high 10 saves while facing 19 total shots by the Jayhawks. Her 10 saves were the most in a Big 12 game this season. This was her seventh career match with five or more saves, including her fourth this season. The 10 saves tied for the third-most in a Big 12 match in school history and tied for the fourth-highest total for all matches.

This season, Werremeyer has established a new career-high for wins in a season with three and owns two shutouts. She leads the Big 12 in saves per game at 4.67.

K-State will play a pair of home matches next week. The Wildcats host 12th-ranked West Virginia on Thursday, October 7, at 7 p.m. Thursday's match will be Pride Night, as the first 125 fans will receive a custom K-State Pride sticker.
