MANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off a stellar performance at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional, the Kansas State women's tennis team will compete at the Big 12 Fall Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Friday (November 5) through Sunday (November 7).
"I am excited for our team to play in their last event of the fall," said head coach Jordan Smith. "It's the second installment of this Big 12-only tournament. We've been performing well as a group this fall which definitely showed during our last outing."
"The goal for this tournament is to be a little more courageous in some areas of our games. Most of the faces we've seen before so there should be a higher sense of belief to go for it. I like where our doubles mentality has been this fall. This weekend we are playing three new pairs and know we'll continue with the great momentum here and on the singles court. This should be an exciting three days of competition for the Wildcats."
The Wildcats enjoyed strong performances in their last outing at the ITA Central Regional in Iowa City, Iowa on October 21-25.
Sophomore Manami Ukita and freshman Dinara Alloyarova advanced to the doubles quarterfinals after defeating Big 12 foes Martina Zerulo and Alana Wolfberg of Oklahoma State, 8-5.
Senior Ioana Gheorghita took down Elys Ventura from Missouri, 4-6, 6-3 (10-6), in the semifinals of the main draw consolation bracket. After falling to Myroslava Zelenchuk from SE Missouri State, Gheorghita earned the runner-up title.
In the singles draw, senior Maria Linares was victorious against Alexandra Pizareva from Big 12 rival Oklahoma. The Venezuelan native took down Pizareva in three-sets, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-1.
For the first time in program history, senior Karine-Marion Job won the runner-up title in the singles main draw, qualifying for the ITA Fall Nationals Championships in San Diego, California. She will compete at the Barnes Tennis Center on Thursday (November 4) with 32 of the nation's top collegiate singles players.
During the fall campaign, the Wildcats have competed at the Ole Miss Invite, ITF Tennis W15, SMU Red and Blue Challenge and the ITA Central Regionals. The Big 12 Fall Championships will mark the end of the fall season.
With 42 entries for singles and 20 doubles pairs, there will be two singles draws of 16 with a third draw of 10 and one draw for doubles.
The first two days of competition will begin at 10 a.m. CT and Sunday (November 7) will begin at 9 a.m. CT.
