Latimer Shows Out in Shot Put, K-State Closes Out Final Indoor Home Meet with Steve Miller Open

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With one final tune up before conference and national meets, the Kansas State track and field teams closed out the Steve Miller Open with a plethora of individual accolades on Saturday (February 20) afternoon at Ahearn Field House.
"I think the day started off on a pretty good note in the weight," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Colin (Echols) threw solid. He had a throw that was a few inches out of the sector. But it was a quality effort. Coming out of this week, hopefully we can feel confident going into next week. We did have some folks who have not competed all season who competed today, and those fifth-year people came out and had quality marks as well."
Among those performances, junior Taylor Latimer recorded the fifth-best mark in school history with her outing in the shot put. During her third attempt in the ring, Latimer fired a throw of 16.43m/53-11, which gave her the win on Saturday. Her previous best was set at 16.17m/53-00.25 at the 2019 Razorback Invitational.
"Honestly, that throw was not even one of my best throws," said Latimer. "This was my best indoor mark so far. This past week I have been trying to get my form down and grasp more concepts. I have been working with Rovelto, hitting the weight room. I guess it is better late than never. This whole season has been getting back to where I am capable of. The goal is to keep building from what this meet was."
After Latimer's outing, K-State continued to power its way towards personal bests in both the weight throw and shot-put events. Freshmen Jasmine Greer (2nd, 18.13m/59-5.75) and Jaycee Schroeder (3rd, 16.50m/54-1.75) showed out with career bests in the women's weight throw, while freshman James Higgs launched a throw of 14.28m/46-10.25 to record a new personal record in the men's shot put.
"Jasmine (Greer) threw over 18 meters for the first time which was solid," said Rovelto.
The top spot in the women's weight throw went to senior Shaelyn Ward, as she posted a throw of 19.37m/63-6.75 to score another victory on her plate for the 2020-21 season.
The track athletes came out with a sense of urgency in the latter half of Saturday's schedule, with Will Carroll (1st, 1:55.98, 800 Meters), Aiden Higgerson (1st, 4:22.47, Mile Run) and Delaney Kemp (2nd, 2;15.95, 800 Meters) earning personal bests in the middle-distance races.
That momentum carried over into the long-distance events, as Helen Giefer (2nd, 10:33.29, 3000 Meters) and Katie Kasunic (4th, 11;05.06, 3000 Meters) paved their way to new personal bests.
Even the unattached athletes made an impact during Saturday's slate of events, as senior Lauren Taubert broke the Steve Miller Open 60-meter hurdles record with a blazing time of 8.30 seconds. The previous mark was set 15 years before by former Wildcat Lisi Maurer in 2006 (8.34). Her stellar performance in the 60-meter hurdles also earned her a new personal record in the event.
Taubert also found success in the women's long jump, as the Casper, Wyoming, native recorded another personal best in the sand at 6.03m/19-950.
"Lauren (Taubert) looked really good," said Rovelto.
Senior Jah Strange, who transferred from Purdue, jolted down the track in 22.03 seconds to secure the win in the 200 meters. Just before his win on the track, Strange leaped his way to another victory in the triple jump event with a mark of 15.23m/49-11.75.
"Jah also looked really good today," said Rovelto.
Other notable performances from the Wildcats came in the high jump and pole-vault competitions, as Matas Adamonis (1st, 1.95m/6-4.75, High Jump), Reagan Hukill (1st, 3.65m/11-11.75, Pole Vault) and Chandler Heid (1st, 4.60m/15-1.00, Pole Vault) pushed themselves to top finishes in their respective events.
"It is kind of our intention to have our best marks come at the end of the season," said Rovelto. "We expect that. It does not always work out that way. It speaks really well going into next week."
K-State will now prepare for the biggest meet of the 2021 season, as both groups travel down to Lubbock, Texas on Friday, February 26 for the Big 12 Indoor Championship, located inside the Sports Performance Center. This will mark the second time in Big 12 history that the conference indoor meet will be held at Texas Tech.
