K-State Falls in Upset Bid Against (8/8) Baylor
Feb 07, 2021 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State held an early lead over (8/8) Baylor on Sunday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum, but the Lady Bears connected five times from beyond the arc in the second quarter to avoid the upset with a 64-52 win over the Wildcats.
"I thought it was pretty good," said K-State head coach Jeff Mittie about his team's defensive effort holding Baylor to 21 points below their season average. "(Dijonai) Carrington hurt us in the first half with the threes. They bring a better shooting lineup coming off the bench. They went to that pretty early and then started the second half with it. Overall, I thought our defense was really good."
K-State (5-11, 0-9 Big 12) held an 11-7 lead with 4:35 remaining in the first quarter, as Ayoka Lee scored six of the 11 points to begin the contest. The Lady Bears ended the quarter with a 9-0 run to build a 16-11 advantage.
Lee would end the day with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting, five rebounds, one block and one steal. This was her 14th career 20-point game and her fifth this season.
Baylor (14-2, 9-1 Big 12) would knock down 5-of-7 from 3-point range in the second quarter to hold a 37-26 lead at halftime. Of the five 3-pointers, Dijonai Carrington and Moon Ursin connected on two each. Four of the five came immediately after a K-State basket.
The Lady Bears led by eight, 29-21, with 3:27 to play in the stanza but Sydney Goodson buried a 3-pointer to bring the Wildcats within five, 29-24, with 2:58 to play. It would be the closest K-State would come to pulling the upset, as Baylor ended the first half with an 8-2 run for the 11-point lead.
The Lady Bears won the third quarter, 15-12, to increase their lead to 52-38. Baylor shot 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from the field in the third stanza, while K-State was held to a 28.6 percent effort (4-of-14).
K-State was able to trim the deficit to 10 on five different occasions and outscore Baylor in the fourth quarter, 14-12, but the Wildcats could not maneuver the game into single-digits.
Joining Lee in double digits was redshirt junior guard Rachel Ranke with 12 points and team-highs of seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Ranke was 3-of-8 from beyond the arc and ranks seventh in program history with 203 career connections from 3-point range.
K-State ended the afternoon shooting 42.6 percent (20-of-47) from the field but were held to a 26.7 percent effort (4-of-15) from beyond the arc. The Wildcats dished out 17 assists on the 20 made field goals, but had 21 turnovers. Defensively, K-State blocked four shots to extend their streak to 55 consecutive games with at least one block and pocketed a season-high 10 steals.
Baylor cashed in a 49.0 percent (24-of-49) from the floor and a 38.9 percent (7-of-18) performance from 3-point range. The Lady Bears held a 27-26 edge on the glass and were forced into 17 turnovers.
K-State returns to the state of Texas on Wednesday, as the Wildcats face TCU at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday's game will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. The game will also be carried on the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com.
What They Said
JEFF MITTIE, HEAD COACH
Opening Statement…
"We were able to keep the game at a pace that was manageable for us. I think at the end of the day, our turnovers are so problematic. Post entry was a challenge. They're obviously super athletic down there. They're going to play you top side. The windows are small to pass it in there, but those are plays that are opportunities for us as well. I liked our fight. I thought Cymone Goodrich had a good second half. I thought Rachel Ranke had a terrific overall game. I thought she got into a good rhythm shooting the ball. I thought her effort was really good. She had four assists, one turnover and three steals, so I thought her statline was really, really good. Thought Lee really battled down there. She's body on body the entire time with three, four, five people running at her. I thought our group fought hard. Laura Macke had good minutes in there. I thought Taylor Lauterbach gave good minutes and Ashley Ray. Everybody on the stat sheet maybe some didn't have what looks to be a good game, but they were still able to find ways to contribute one way or another."
On the defensive effort against Baylor today...
"I thought it was pretty good. Carrington hurt us in the first half with the threes. They bring a better shooting lineup coming off the bench. They went to that pretty early and then started that the second half. Overall, I thought our defense was really good. Flew around well and had good court awareness. Overall, it was pretty solid. Defensive rebounding was good. Rachel leads us in that. Her overall stat line was really good. It's good for her coming back into a good groove and getting her legs under her."
On the guard play without Carr and Moore...
"I thought the guards had a good commitment to the game plan. I think that's part of the battle is having a unified commitment. While there were mistakes and physical mistakes and judgment mistakes, Baylor puts you into small windows. Your timing has to be really, really good and there were some problems with that. I thought our guards really committed as a unit to play well and play to the game plan."
AYOKA LEE, SOPHOMORE CENTER
On the team's performance against Baylor…
"I thought we played hard. I think what it came down to was that we made a lot of mistakes on our end. I think we played hard. Our defense was really good, I felt like."
On building the early lead...
"We were just trying to stick to the game plan. We did a good job of rebounding in those first five minutes. We did a good job of sticking to the game plan."
On the team's passing today...
"I thought they did a good job of getting the ball inside. That was a big part of the game plan, especially with Chrissy out and not having her scoring. We knew we needed to get the ball in the paint to get their defense to shift to create open shots for our guards. I thought they did a really good job, especially as the game continued to go on."
RACHEL RANKE, REDSHIRT JUNIOR GUARD
On the defensive effort today…
"I think we had a pretty big challenge here going against Baylor. They're a great team and athletic. We knew we had to be aggressive on the blocks with their bigs. I thought we did really well with it tonight, honestly. I thought we were physical with them. I thought we played overall pretty good defense."
On playing without Carr and Moore today…
"We knew we had to be a little more aggressive without Chrissy and Jada. We had to find other ways to score, be a little bit more decisive. Without them, it was different, but we knew we had to make adjustments."
On the guard play today…
"We were sharing the ball well. We were finding each other and making the right plays. We weren't trying to do too much. We were just trying to look for the next pass. I thought we shared the ball great. We were looking to play as a team more. It was good for us obviously with 17 assists on 20 makes."
