Wildcats Fall to Shockers, 5-1

Mar 23, 2021 | Baseball

WICHITA, Kan. – K-State got two hits from both Nick Goodwin and Zach Kokoska, but committed two errors, stranded 10 baserunners and allowed three unearned runs in a 5-1 loss to Wichita State Tuesday night at Eck Stadium.

The Wildcats (13-7) held a one-run lead after the second inning, but the Shockers (9-8) scored three in the third aided by a K-State error. Down two in the eighth, the Cats loaded the bases with no out but were unable to plate the tying run.

"We left 10 guys on base," head coach Pete Hughes said after the game. "We had opportunities to take control of the game early, and didn't. We had another opportunity to take the lead late, and we didn't. And our inability to play catch, cost us runs. The story of the game, really, is simply not playing clean baseball defensively and leaving runners on base."

K-State ended the night hitless with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-10. WSU pitchers combined to strike out three consecutive hitters with the bases loaded and nobody out in the eighth inning, as the Cats were 0-for-4 with the bases loaded.

K-State loaded the bases in the top of the second after Dylan Phillips reached on a Wichita State error, Kokoska singled and Austin Garrett drew a walk. Kaden Fowler's groundout scored Phillips to hand the Cats an early 1-0 lead.

WSU's three-run third began with K-State starter Zak Herbers hitting WSU catcher Ross Cadena. After Seth Stroh singled, Jack Sigrist laid down a sacrifice bunt attempt, but Herbers' throw got by Goodwin, who was covering first base, and Cadena was able to score from second. A two-run single by Couper Cornblum capped the inning and gave the Shockers a 3-1 advantage.

Herbers lasted three innings in the start, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits with a strikeout. His record dropped to 1-1.

In the fourth, Brett Wozniak struck out the side in order and retired the first five he saw and eight of the 10 he faced. Wozniak's 2 2/3 innings and four strikeouts both marked career highs.

Caleb Littlejim entered the game in the sixth and, after a walk and a hit by pitch, struck out Cadena to leave the bases loaded and keep the deficit at two runs.

A Goodwin single sandwiched between walks by Cameron Thompson and Phillips loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth. WSU's Ryan Stuempfig struck out Kokoska and Chris Ceballos before Aaron Haase entered the game with two outs and got Garrett to strike out to end the threat.

Haase earned his fifth save of the season after throwing an inning and a third with a strikeout.

Wichita State tacked on two runs in the either, one coming on K-State's second error on a pick off attempt, and the final run scoring via a Hunter Gibson RBI single.

Shockers starter Jace Kaminska earned the victory in his first collegiate start after logging five innings and allowing one unearned run. Kaminska struck out four and walked two while scattering three hits.

Goodwin and Kokoska each ended the night 2-or-4. Fowler doubled, turning in the only extra-base hit from either side, and had an RBI.

Phillips pushed his on-base streak to 31 games with his eighth-inning walk while Kokoska's on-base streak now sits at 16 games.

The Cats went 1-for-10 with two outs. WSU hit .500 with runners in scoring position (3-for-6).

K-State opens Big 12 play Friday at Oklahoma State, kicking off a three-game series at O'Brate Stadium. The series opener will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with radio coverage on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM). Fans can also catch live, free audio at K-StateSports.com/watch.
