Texas State Rallies to Stun K-State in Five Sets Thursday

Mar 04, 2021 | Volleyball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State got a career-high 27 kills from Aliyah Carter Thursday, but Texas State rallied to overcome a two-set deficit to defeat the Wildcats in their spring opener in five sets at Bramlage Coliseum, 25-19, 25-15, 20-25, 22-25, 9-15.

Carter broke her own program record for kills by a freshman, as the outside hitter equaled the third-highest kill total in the rally-scoring era. K-State (10-7, 10-6 Big 12) owned a 68-50 edge in total kills, including a 32-18 advantage through two sets at a .382 clip.

After the second set, Texas State (27-3, 15-1 Sun Belt) limited the Cats to a .112 hitting efficiency behind eight blocks and 56 digs to claim its seventh victory over its last eight matches. The Bobcats, the Sun Belt Conference champions, hit .300 (7 kills, 1 error, 20 attacks) in the final set and ended the match on a 6-2 scoring run.

"At this point, this is a really frustrating loss for us," head coach Suzie Fritz said. "Being up two like we were, humming pretty good in games one and two. We couldn't sustain in some ways - levels of execution and we started to get a little more high error. I thought, to Texas State's credit, they upgraded pretty significantly in games three and five, as well. They were playing their best volleyball at the end of the match. In contrast, we were not.

"I thought early in the match, we were doing a tremendous job of controlling the net and doing a nice job with transition, that touch to transition kind of sequence, and productive touches. It's just really disappointing to be up two and not get better in games three, four and five. I feel like that is a missed opportunity for us."

The Wildcats trailed just once in the first two games of the match. The fourth set saw 10 tie scores and five lead changes, as TSU tallied five of the final seven points to force a final frame.

Carter, playing six rotations for the first time in her career, recorded five digs, three blocks and a season-high four service aces. The Dubuque, Iowa, product turned in her fourth 20-kill match of the season.

"Well, I think the thing I'm probably the proudest of is the non-attacking skills," Fritz said of Carter. "She played good defense, she was a primary passer for us, she held up for us in serve receive. To go from playing primarily in the fall, she played three rotations for us and we had her playing six rotations, taking some swings out of the back row. I thought she did a really nice job at the net blocking as well."

Fellow freshman Kadye Fernholz eclipsed her career-high kill output, recording 13 at a .333 efficiency. Fernholz added a team-high four blocks.

Setter Teana Adams-Kaonohi posted career bests in both assists (59) and digs (17) to produce the third double-double of her career.

Freshman libero Mackenzie Morris picked up a match-high 24 digs, as she paced K-State for the 17th straight match. It marked Morris' fifth 20-dig performance of the year.

Texas State was led by Caitlan Buettner and her 13 kills while Tyeranee Scott added 10. Scott turned in a match-high six total blocks.

The match marked the Wildcats' ninth five-set outing of the season (6-3). It was the first time K-State suffered a defeat after holding a 2-0 lead since October 16, 2019 at Oklahoma.

K-State will host Saint Louis at Bramlage Coliseum on Sunday, March 14 at 2 p.m. The match will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and the ESPN app. Fans can also listen to Rob Voelker call the action on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and at K-StateSports.com/watch.
