Hammer Throw Performance Highlights Day One at Michael Johnson Invitational

Apr 16, 2021 | Track & Field

Ingvaldsen set stadium record with winning toss of 65.71m/215-07

WACO, Texas – Senior Helene Ingvaldsen led a 1-2-3 finish by the Wildcats in the women's hammer throw to highlight a solid first day by the Kansas State track and field teams at the Michael Johnson Invitational on Friday afternoon (April 16) at Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium.

Sophomore Kassidy Johnson joined Ingvaldsen atop the podium with the Wildcats' other event title of the day with a first-place finish in the women's 1,500 meters in a time of 4:23.69. It was Ingvaldsen's second title in the hammer this spring and the first since the UTSA Invitational on March 20, while it was Johnson's second career win in the 1,500 meters at the Michael Johnson Invitational and the first this outdoor season. In all, 14 Wildcats collected personal bests in 10 events on the day.

In addition, Ingvaldsen and freshman Jaybe Shufelberger set stadium marks in their respective events. Ingvaldsen's winning throw of 65.71m/215-07 on her final attempt in the hammer throw eclipsed the mark of former Wildcat Sara Saratovic, who set the previous record at the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium of 63.21m/207-4 on April 3, 2015. Shufelberger was one of four runners to break the mark in the women's 5000 meters, as the Topeka, Kansas native posted a time of 16:43.78 to place fourth in her first career race.

"We are getting to the point in the season where personally I tend to look at what we do with the conference championships in mind," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Given that, what the girls did in the hammer was the highlight of the day. We did have some strong performances otherwise as well with a number of PRs. We just have to continue to improve. We look forward to tomorrow as we will have some great competition in virtually every event."

Ingvalden, a native of Bergen, Norway, threw better than 62 meters in all six attempts in the hammer, including her stadium-best mark of 65.71m/215-07 on her final toss, to easily defeat teammate and fellow senior Shaelyn Ward, who finished second with a mark of 61.65m/202-3.25. Ingvaldsen and Ward were the only participants to throw better than 60 meters or 200 feet. Senior Ashley Petr completed 1-2-3 performance by the Wildcats with a personal-best toss of 59.49m/195-02.25 to place third and continue the ninth-best mark in school history.

Johnson led five Wildcats in the women's 1,500 meters with her winning time of 4:23.69, while junior Cayli Hume finished seventh with a time of 4:34.33 in her first attempt in the event. They were followed by a trio of freshmen in Sydney Burton (4:37.01/9th), Hannah Stewart (4:37.03/10th) and Delaney Kemp (4:41.53/16th), who all placed in the top-20. Stewart and Kemp each posted personal bests in the event.

Shufelberger led an impressive effort in the women's 5,000 meters, as all five runners finished in the top-30, including Shufelberger's fourth-best finish in her first career attempt in the race. Her time of 16:43.78 is the 10th-best in school history and the best by a Wildcat since 2015. Junior Cara Melgeres (17:14.22/8th), freshman Helen Giefer (18:16.37/21st) and sophomore Katie Kasunic (18:42.94/26th) all posted personal bests, while sophomore Cailan Steward was solid in her first-ever 5,000 with a time of 18:23.98 to finish 23rd overall.

Freshman Kade McCall placed fifth in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 61.53m/201-10.50 on his second attempt. The Boise, Idaho native has now thrown better than 60 meters in the hammer in all four outdoor meets. Teammate Colin Echols posted a throw of 54.85m/179-11.50 to finish 10th.

In the men's 1,500 race, four of the five Wildcats finished in the top-12, including a personal-best time of 3:49.10 by senior Noah Stevenson, who finished in fifth place. Sophomore Hadley Splechter, who is coming off an event title in the men's 3,000 steeplechase at the Jim Click Shootout on April 10, placed seventh with a time of 3:51.37 in his first attempt in the race this outdoor season. The pair was followed by sophomores Mike Rohlinger (3:54.03) and Cooper Schroeder (3:56.36), who finished in 11th and 12th, respectively. It was a personal best for Rohlinger and the first attempt this outdoor season for Schroeder in the event.

All four Wildcat runners finished in the top-20 in the men's 5,000 meters, including top-10 finishes by sophomores Kerby Depenbush (14:34.29/7th) and David Lutgen (14:41.85/9th). Another pair of sophomores – Jack Moore (15:09.18/17th) and Jack Thomas (15:12.37/20th) – each collected personal-best times.

A pair of Wildcats achieved personal bests in the pole vault competition, as junior Jessica Williams registered a leap of 3.61m/11-10.00 to finish fourth in the women's event, while sophomore Jesse Pinkley earned a mark of 4.71m/15-05.50 to tie for ninth in the men's field. Williams' mark was eighth-best in school history and the best by a Wildcat since 2015. In addition to Pinkley, sophomore Chandler Heid posted a vault of 4.51m/14-09.50 to finish 12th.

A young group of two freshmen and two sophomores competed in the men's and women's javelin with sophomore Baylee Unruh and freshman Katelyn Young each posting personal bests. Unruh led the women's team with a personal-best toss of 38.31m/125-08.25 to place 10th and was followed by fellow sophomore Urte Bacianskaite (35.88m/117-08.75) and Young (35.64m/116-11.25) in 12th and 13th places, respectively. Freshman Luke Ralston finished fifth in the men's competition with a mark of 61.11m/200-06.00.
