K-State Claims Six Event Titles to Conclude Michael Johnson Invitational

The Wildcats sweep the long jump and triple jump competitions
WACO, Texas – The Kansas State track and field teams captured six event titles, including a sweep of the men's and women's long jump and triple jump events, to cap the final day of the Michael Johnson Invitational on Saturday (April 17) at Baylor's Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium.
Senior Colin Echols started the run of first-place finishes in the first event of the day with a personal-best throw of 53.31m/174-11.10 to win the men's discus throw, which was then followed by titles by seniors Jullane Walker and Taishia Pryce in the men's and women's long jump competitions and senior Tejaswin Shankar and junior Chantoba Bright in the men's and women's triple jump events. Senior Kyle Alcine wrapped up the day with a win in the men's high jump with a mark of 2.10m/6-10.75.
"Conditions were pretty rough most of the weekend," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Rain and strong winds on Friday, while we had rain, wind and cool (weather) on Saturday. It definitely affected marks in some events. There were a number of strong performances in spite of the conditions, and we probably had some subpar performances due to the conditions and, in some cases, how we handled the conditions. We just want to see the athletes compete hard head-to-head regardless of circumstances."
Overall, K-State collected eight event titles at the two-day meet, which began with first-place finishes by senior Helene Ingvaldsen in the women's hammer and sophomore Kassidy Johnson in the women's 1,500 meters on Friday (April 16). In all, 18 Wildcats collected personal bests throughout the weekend.
Walker and Pryce followed Echols with wins in the men's and women's long jump in the third and fourth events of the day, as Walker recorded a mark of 7.56m/24-09.75 on his first attempt to win by 4 inches, while Pryce posted her winning jump of 6.14m/20-01.75 on her second attempt. Fellow senior Jah Strange finished in fourth place in the men's competition with a jump of 7.32m/24-00.25.
Bright was part of a 1-2 finish in the women's triple jump, as her mark of 13.19m/43-03.25 defeated teammate and freshman Rhianna Phipps, who finished second with a jump of 12.90m/42-04.00. Bright and Phipps were both coming off wins last weekend at the Jim Click Shootout, as Bright won the long jump with a personal-best mark of 6.31m/20-08.50 and Phipps captured the triple jump title with a personal-best of 13.18m/43-03.00.
Shankar finished off the sweep in the triple jump with a first-place mark of 15.88m/52-01.25 to win by more than 2 feet, while sophomore Devon Richardson placed third with a leap of 15.07m/49-05.50.
Alcine won the high jump by outdueling Texas Tech's Jequan Hogan on misses. The senior did not have a miss until he couldn't clear the bar on all three attempts at 2.15m. On the women's side, freshman Maddie Righter was solid in her first career meet, posting a height of 1.66m/5.05.25 to finish fifth, including fourth among collegians.
In addition to the successful day in the field, the men's and women's relay teams also performed well against a strong field. The women'x 4x100 meter relay team of Wurrie Njadoe, Shalysa Wray, Bright and Kimisha Chambers started things off with a third-place finish with a time of 45.72 before Chambers and Wray joined O'shalia Johnson and Lauren Taubert to place third overall – second among collegians – in the women's 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:38.19. The men's 4x400 meter relay team of Tim Lambert, Jr., Justin Davis, Sean Wilson and Strange also finished third, including second among collegians, with a time of 3:11.02.
Despite a really, strong field, there were a number of solid performances on the track, including in the men's and women's hurdles, the women's 200 and both 800-meter races.
Junior Vitoria Alves was among two Wildcats to record top-10 finishes in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a third-place time of 13.29, while Chambers was eighth with a time of 13.62. Overall, four of the five Wildcats who competed in the event finished in the top-20, including Taubert in 13th with a time of 13.78. Taubert also placed eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.40.
Sophomore Donovan Turner was eighth in the men's 110-meter hurdles, followed by Shankar (15.24/18th) and junior Matas Adamonis (15.68/21st). Adamonis, who is one of the top decathletes in the college ranks, had a busy day, finishing sixth in the shot put with a throw of 13.78m/45-02.50, while he was 15th in the discus throw with a mark of 43.20m/141-08.75.
In addition to her solid effort in the 4x100-meter relay, Njadoe continued her strong outdoor season with a fifth-place finish in the women's 200 meters with a time of 23.71, which was third-best time by a collegian.
The Wildcats got strong showing in the men's and women's 800 meters, as seven athletes combined to finish in the top-20. Senior Travis Hodge led the men's team with a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:50.79 and was followed by top-20 finishers sophomore Mike Rohlinger (1:53.47/10th), senior Dylan Brenneman (1:54.87/16th) and sophomore Kyle Johnston (1:56.04/19th). Johnson followed up her win in the 1,500 meters on Friday with another solid effort in the women's 800 meters, finishing in sixth place with a time of 2:06.77. Junior Alex Ferguson (2:08.77) and senior Cayli Hume (2:10.27) also placed among the top-15 in the 800 meters.
The Wildcats will return to action next weekend in Norman, Oklahoma for the J.D. Martin Invitational on Friday-Saturday, April 23-24 at John Jacobs Track Complex.
