Carter’s Double-Double Propels Cats to Season-Opening Win

Aug 27, 2021 | Volleyball

LINCOLN, Neb.Aliyah Carter's 21 kills and 11 digs helped K-State claim a four-set victory (19-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-16) over Colgate in its season opener at the Husker Invitational at Devaney Center Friday.

Carter turned in the second double-double of her career while her 11 digs marked a career high. Carter, a sophomore, eclipsed the 20-kill plateau for the seventh time in her career. Holly Bonde added 11 kills off the bench and newcomer Haley Warner added 10 kills to help the Wildcats erase an early one-set deficit.

"We went into the match with two primary objectives: try to hold (Colgate) under .180 and we ended up in the match holding them to .170 overall. Our other goal was to manage the match well, and match management includes error management, and I think we were not successful in that capacity," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "It did get better as we went. We settled in a little bit as the match went on, but Colgate is a really good volleyball team. Their serve-pass game is good and they've got some big arms."

K-State (1-0) committed 11 attacking errors on its way to hitting just .081 in the opening set. Over the next three sets, the Cats totaled just 16 total attacking errors and finished the day with a .242 efficiency. K-State hit north of .250 in each of the final three games and carded a match-best .417 percentage in the final frame.

After dropping the first set, Carter logged eight kills in the second at a .455 clip to help even the match. Warner, in her Wildcat debut, produced four kills on eight swings in the set and Teana Adams-Kaonohi handed out 11 assists.

Adams-Kaonohi recorded six block assists through two sets and finished with a career-high seven blocks. The junior setter flirted with a triple double with her 43 assists, nine digs and seven block assists.

Tied at a set apiece, K-State and Colgate (0-1) battled through 12 tie scores in the third. The Wildcats withstood an 8-1 scoring run by the Raiders and later possessed a 22-21 lead after a kill from Bonde. Colgate fended off set point before a tandem block from Kayley Hollywood and Warner gave the Cats a 2-1 match lead.

Bonde registered six of her 11 kills in the third set, turning in a .364 hitting efficiency. Carter added five more kills and Hollywood and Warner each contributed a pair of blocks. Hollywood, a middle blocker, finished with six block assists on the day.

K-State raced out to a 9-2 lead in the fourth, including eight unanswered points behind the serve of senior Jacque Smith. The Cats led by as many as nine in closing out their first season-opening win since 2018. Carter and Kadye Fernholz each picked up four kills on four attacks to help produce a .417 team hitting efficiency.

Fernholz hit .375 while tallying eight kills to go with five block assists. Smith led the squad with a pair of aces.

Carter got seven of her career-best 11 digs in the opening set. Her dig total not only marked a career high but was also the first time in her career leading the team in the category.

"The thing I am probably most pleased about, which doesn't jump off the page, is her passing" head coach Suzie Fritz said of Carter. "Her passing is getting better and the more we ask of her, the better it's getting. She's hitting .324 and playing six rotations, really a good match for her."

Sophomore libero Mackenzie Morris turned in 10 digs, as the Wildcats owned a 50-39 edge in total digs. K-State also held a 12-7 advantage in total blocks and led 58-44 in kills.

Warner, a senior opposite transfer from Florida, turned in her first collegiate match with double-digit kills. In her Wildcat debut, she carded 10 kills on 20 attempts (four errors) in hitting .300. The Fayetteville, Arkansas, product added two block assists and three digs.

Colgate saw three players reach double-figure kills in Abby Shadwick (14), Hailey Horn-Bostel (11) and Libby Overmyer (10).

Sophie Thompson had a team-best six total blocks while libero Taylor Cigna had a match-high 17 digs.
