Bacianskaite’s Win, Personal Records Highlight Day One of DeLoss Dodds Invitational
Jan 21, 2022 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Highlighted by a pentathlon win by junior Urte Bacianskaite, the Kansas State track and field teams put together impressive performances during the first day of the DeLoss Dodds Invitational on Friday (January 21) at the Ahearn Field House.
"The first four events were solid for Urte," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "She could have got more, but clearly demonstrated that she is heading in the right direction. The 800 is definitely a work in progress for her, but she is trying."
Bacianskaite won the Austra Skujyte Women's Pentathlon wire-to-wire with a personal-best total of 3,622 points. She won or tied four events, taking home the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 9.18, the shot put with a mark of 13.78m/45-2.50 and the long jump at 5.32m/17-5.5, while she tied for first in the high jump at 1.64m/5-4.50. Bacianskaite finished out the pentathlon with a time of 2:43.00 in the 800 meters to finish third.
Junior Maddie Righter finished third in the pentathlon with 3,127 points thanks to a tie for first in the high jump (13.78m/45.2-50) and a second place showing in the shot put (10.66m/34-11.75). Righter finished the pentathlon in between a pair of Kansas competitors in Alice Boasso (second; 3,375) and Lauren Heck (fourth; 3,056).
Fifth-year senior Tejaswin Shankar led through the first three events of the Steve Fritz Men's Heptathlon with 2,425 points. He won two of the first three competitions, taking the long jump with a leap of 7.40m/24-3.50 and the shot put with a personal-best throw of 13.35m/43-9.75. He also set a personal best with a time of 7.16 seconds in the 60 meters to finish second.
During the high jump – the fourth event of the day – Shankar passed until 2.11 meters but came up lame in warmups and withdrew from the event. He enters Saturday in third place.
"TJ's 60 and shot put were personal-bests and the long jump was solid," said Rovelto. "Warming up for the high jump, he came up with an injury in his calf. The doctor believes it is not serious, but his training will be affected for a few weeks. He made 2.11 meters pretty easily warming up, so physically he was ready to jump well. He was on pace for 5,900 or so, so it is a shame, but unfortunately that is part of the sport."
Senior Matas Adamonis finished Friday in second place in the heptathlon with 2,477 points. After finishing fifth in the 60 meters (7.75) to open the day, he came in second in the shot put with a mark of 13.13m/43-1.00 and tied for second in the high jump at 1.69m/5-6.60. Adamonis also placed third in the long jump with a leap of 6.21m/20-4.50.
Freshmen Emil Uhlin and Carl af Forselles – each of whom are competing in the heptathlon for the first time in their collegiate careers – are in fifth and sixth, respectively. Uhlin enters the final three events with 1,906 points thanks in part to a tie for second place in the high jump (1.69m/5-6.60). af Forselles has accumulated 1,474 points, which included a win in the 60 meters with a time of 7.09.
"Our freshmen male decs ran the 60 and threw shot and tomorrow will hurdle and run the 1,000," said Rovelto. "They both had personal-bests in the shot and Carl ran well in the 60. Emil was fine, but has just recently been able to sprint."
K-State alumni Janee' Kassanavoid made her way back to the Ahearn Field House and threw 23.74m/77-10.75 in her first attempt in the weight throw competition that bears her name to set a new facility and meet record. She then fouled four-straight times before topping that mark with a final toss of 24.05m/78-11.0.
Behind Kassanavoid, the next five finishers in the Janee' Kassanavoid Women's Weight Throw were all Wildcats as sophomore Monique Hardy (competing unattached) was second at 20.38m/66-10.50, while junior Emma Robbins was third at 19.78m/64-10.75. The next three were all sophomores with Emily Fuhr finishing fourth with a toss of 19.03m/62-5.25, Jasmine Greer in fifth at 18.13m/59-5.75 and Lacey Pavlak in sixth with a mark of 15.98m/52-5.25.
"The weight throw went fairly well for us in general," stated Rovelto. "It was great to see Janee' continue to improve. Due to COVID, her opportunities were pretty limited the past couple of years, so it is great to see her perform well."
Winning the men's pole vault, sophomore Jesse Pinkley set a new personal record as he cleared the bar at 5.00m/16-4.75. He tied his personal best on his second attempt at 4.90 meters, but only needed one try at 5.00 meters to set his highwater mark.
Also setting a personal-best mark was sophomore Kade McCall in the Mitch Dixon Men's Weight Throw, winning the event with a final toss of 19.71m/64-08.00.
In the Erin Anderson Women's Pole Vault, senior Tommi Hintnaus was the only competitor to clear the bar, doing so at 3.80m/12-5.50 on her second attempt. Sophomore Reagan Hukill passed until 3.50 meters and missed on her three attempts.
The final day of the DeLoss Dodds Invitational will take place on Saturday (January 22) inside the Ahearn Field House. Competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT with the final three events of the Steve Fritz Men's Heptathlon. Field events for the DeLoss Dodds Invitational begin at 10 a.m. CT with the Dani Winters Shot Put, while track events begin at 12 p.m. CT with the women's mile.
