K-State Closes Out DeLoss Dodds Invitational with Impressive Performances

Jan 22, 2022 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field teams put together more personal bests, while two more meet records fell, as the Wildcats concluded the DeLoss Dodds Invitational on Saturday (January 22) inside Ahearn Field House.

"Overall, the meet was pretty solid," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "It was good to get some folks back that had been out for one reason or another. I thought Alex Ferguson and Kassidy Johnson ran well. Shalysa Wray ran well in the 4x400 and Devon (Richardson) had a personal-best in the high jump. With the weight throw and shot put making progress and the multis getting healthy, we are getting better as a team."

Juniors Kassidy Johnson and Hannah Stewart each ran the Women's 1 Mile under the meet record time, with Johnson taking home the new record with a time of 4:47.92 to finish first to Stewart's second-place mark of 4:50.26. The previous record was 4:53.30 by K-State's Annie Wetterhusin in 1999.

Another meet record was set in the Women's 300 Meters as junior Shalysa Wray won the event with a time of 38.21 seconds, over 2 seconds better than the previous record of 40.36 seconds. That mark was originally set by Leno Guion-Firmin of Tulsa in 2011 before K-State's Sophia Alonso tied it a year later.

Personal bests were set right out of the gate on Saturday with junior Devon Richardson setting a new personal best with a leap of 2.16m/7-1.00 in the Erik Kynard High Jump. After passing until the 1.91-meter mark, he was the last jumper left at 2.01 meters as he competed against himself and the bar. He was able to top the height of 2.16 meters on his second attempt but was unsuccessful on his three attempts at the next height of 2.19 meters.

In the Dani Winters Shot Put, sophomore Jasmine Greer finished with a personal-best throw of 15.38m/50-5.50 on her fourth attempt. She was followed by a pair of fellow sophomores in Jaycee Schroeder in third place at 14.10m/46-3.25 and Grace Thompson in fourth place with a toss of 13.54m/44-5.25.

A pair of Wildcats squared off in the Mitch Dixon Men's Shot Put with sophomore Jackson Gibbon edging freshman Darius O'Connell. Gibbon's third throw of 15.52m/50-11.00 won the event, while O'Connell set a new personal best in five of his six attempts. His highwater mark came in his second throw with a toss of 14.60m/47-11.00.

In the Bob Price Men's 800 Meters, fifth-year Travis Hodge, running unattached, won with a time of 1:53.06, but it was sophomore Jack Vincent, who had a personal-best time of 1:56.08 to finish second in the event.

Other high finishers on Saturday included freshman Kavian Kerr, who won the Men's 60 Meters with a time of 6.85 second, just 0.02 seconds shy of tying his personal best. Fellow freshman Darian Clarke finished third at 7.00 seconds.

In the Women's 400 Meters, senior Alex Ferguson won the event with a run of 56.95 seconds, followed by fifth-year Macy Heinz in second place at 58.48 seconds. Junior O'Shalia Johnson won the Women's 600 Yards with a time of 1:25.92, while on the men's side, sophomore Will Carroll was second at 1:14.46.

Another winner on Saturday was junior Delaney Kemp in the Sonia Gaskin Women's 800 Meters, as she finished with a time of 2:19.86. Senior Parker McCafferty was the only competitor in the Mike Myers Men's 200 Meters, crossing the line in 23.51 seconds.

In his first competition as a track and field athlete, senior Cameron Key won the Wince Parrette Men's Triple Jump with a leap of 12.30m/46-7.25 on his first attempt, bettering Oral Roberts' Kemuel Sloan by 0.04 meters.

Senior Lavaun Stephenson placed second in the 60 Meter Hurdles with a time of 9.08 seconds, while fifth-year competitor Wurrie Njadoe (7.49 seconds) and freshman Velecia Williams (7.51 seconds) finished second and third in the 60 Meters, respectively. Williams' time was a new personal best.

Running their way to a first-place finish in the women's 4x400-meter relay was Njadoe, Williams, Ferguson and Stephenson with a time of 3:53.28. The K-State B team, consisting of junior Sydney Burton, Heinz, Johnson and Stewart, clocked in a time of 3:58.41 and clinched second place. The Wildcats had one more relay team enter the race. Juniors Urte Bacianskaite, Kindel Nordhus, Kemp and Madeline Righter recorded a time of 4:18.79 and placed fifth overall.

Freshman Antonio Hanson, sophomore Kyle Gale, Carroll and Kerr ran a time of 3:18.13 in the men's 4x400-meter relay, closing out the day with a first-place win. Johnston, Vincent, Derry and Gutierrez rounded out the day in second place with a time of 3:41.49.

K-State will be back in action next Friday and Saturday, January 28 and 29, as the Wildcats head to Lubbock, Texas to take part in the Texas Tech Open & Multis.
