(25/rv) K-State Holds Back TCU Saturday Night

Jan 29, 2022 | Women's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kansas – With a two-point lead in the fourth quarter, freshmen guards Jaelyn Glenn and Serena Sundell hit clutch three-point field goals to propel (25/rv) K-State to a 63-54 win over TCU on Saturday night in front of 5,157 fans at Bramlage Coliseum.

With its win on Saturday night, K-State (16-5, 6-3 Big 12) secured its sixth win in the month of January. The six wins this month are the most since the 2016-17 season and marks the 21st time in program history with six or more wins in the month.

K-State (16-5, 6-3 Big 12) held an eight-point lead, 51-43, entering the fourth quarter, after Emilee Ebert drained a free throw line jumper before time expired in the third quarter. The Horned Frogs sliced the K-State lead to three, 51-48, with 7:36 remaining in the fourth. Lauren Heard finished a layup and Aja Holmes banked in a 3-pointer to close the gap.

TCU would get to within two, 51-49, but consecutive 3-point field goals from Jaelyn Glenn and Sundell pushed K-State into a 57-51 lead with 2:31 remaining.

"For Serena (Sundell) to go 30 and some odd minutes and struggle and then bury that corner three and for us to get the ball moved to her and have her get the confidence to do that, you know that is growth," said K-State head coach Jeff Mittie about the late 3-pointers. "I thought Jaelyn (Glenn) hit a big three right there in front and those are confident and growing plays. I couldn't be more proud of our team."

Ebert would finish a layup with 1:55 remaining to boost the lead to eight, 59-51. Brylee Glenn then pocketed a steal and was quickly fouled. She made both attempts to increase the advantage to 10, 61-51, with 1:46 to play.

Another steal on the next possession for TCU by Brylee Glenn and a quick TCU foul resulted in two more free throws from Glenn to give the Wildcats a 12-point lead, 63-51. Heard would make a 3-pointer as time expired for the final margin.

For the night, K-State shot 93.8 percent (15-of-16) from the free throw line. This was the highest free throw percentage of the season for the Wildcats and the second time in three games K-State has shot 90.0 percent or better from the foul line.

K-State was led by junior center and 2022 All-America candidate Ayoka Lee with a game-high 21 points and pulled in a team-high seven rebounds. Brylee Glenn added 12 points, three rebounds and two steals, while Jaelyn Glenn chipped in with 11 points, three steals and two assists. This was the 10th time this season (10-0), K-State had three or more players reach double figures.

TCU (6-11, 2-6) used a 9-2 run midway through the first quarter to take a 13-9 lead. Jaelyn Glenn buried her second 3-pointer of the quarter to bring the Wildcats to within one, 13-12, with 3:12 remaining. The Horned Frogs would hold a four-point advantage, 18-14, at the end of the first quarter, as the Wildcats went scoreless for the final 2:28 of the frame.

K-State used a 5-0 burst to begin the second quarter to take a 19-18 lead. Rebekah Dallinger opened the quarter with a 3-pointer and was followed by an acrobatic layup by Ebert with 8:11 to play. Dallinger would finish with six points off the bench.

The Horned Frogs went back in front by four, 25-21, on an Aja Holmes three-pointer with 5:40 remaining.

The Wildcats would close the quarter on a 12-3 run, to take a 33-28 lead into the locker room. A turnaround jumper by Lee started the run with 4:50 remaining. Brylee Glenn then connected on a pair of 3-pointers on back-to-back K-State possessions to put the Wildcats back in front, 29-28.

A layup from Lee with 1:07 to play was followed by a steal from Laura Macke. Macke dove on the floor to recover to grab the ball. She then found Cymone Goodrich, who raced up the floor for the uncontested layup with 45 seconds left and give the Wildcats the five-point halftime lead.

In the third quarter, K-State expanded its lead to eight, 41-33, following a layup from Lee with 6:14 to play. Lee scored six of K-State's first eight points in the third stanza.

The Wildcats would extend their advantage to 12, 49-37, with 2:10 remaining in the third. Lee finished an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:47 to play and was followed by a Dallinger three-pointer.

TCU would cut the lead to six, 49-43, before the end of the quarter but the Ebert jumper with 13 seconds left gave K-State an eight-point lead, 51-43, entering the fourth quarter.

K-State finished the night shooting 35.7 percent (20-of-56), including a 38.1 percent (8-of-21) effort from 3-point range. TCU carded a 42.6 percent (20-of-47) from the field but were forced into 20 turnovers.

The Wildcats begin the second half of its 2022 Big 12 schedule in Ames, Iowa, as the Wildcats face (13/13) Iowa State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday's game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. The game will also be available on the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com and on the K-State Sports app.

WHAT THEY SAID

JEFF MITTIE, K-STATE HEAD COACH
Opening Statement...
"I thought it was a good, hard fought win. I thought our defense, after the first five minutes, they were getting the ball against our zone. We were trying to switch defenses, but obviously they were getting a lot of good stuff. We decided to stick man-to-man. I thought our man-to-man was really good. I thought we were physical in the right areas of the floor. We really dug deep on a night where we were not in sync. It was just a tough to get a rhythm game. I am proud of our bench. I thought our bench really gave us a lift. I thought (Rebekah) Dallinger gave us a lift and Cymone (Goodrich) gave us a lift. I thought Jada Moore gave us a lift. I could go on and on, but I think we all came in and did some good things."

On the freshmen stepping up with zone defense and the stress in that situation…
"I just think our ball movement was so slow and unsure. We kind of got in that mode and it says a lot about our character. For Serena (Sundell) to go 30 and some odd minutes and struggle and then bury that corner three and for us to get the ball moved to her and have her get the confidence to do that, you know that is growth. I thought Jaelyn (Glenn) hit a big three right there in front and those are confident and growing plays. I couldn't be more proud of our team. It is easy when you play well and go in and be able to play well and get those victories."

On bouncing back after a loss against Texas…
"I think the one thing we saw tonight was when we were struggling, we seemed to be pressing. One of the timeouts, I told them to just breathe. Just play basketball here, we do it all the time. We are going through a tough stretch and just breathe a little bit here and relax. Let's play tough defense and share the ball. Let's play with the white jersey here. Maybe we were too fixated on getting the ball here instead of just playing with the open player. If you just play with the open player, you can get the ball where you need to. I think that timeout with about four minutes to go, they left that huddle a little bit more relaxed. They definitely played tough with the defense and then they relaxed enough to knock down some shots."

On going against teams in the league that are ranked…
"I think I don't focus on where teams are at right now because we are nine games in and we are just at the halfway mark. I won't pay attention to the standings until we get to game 14 or 15 and see where it shakes out. I know where people are at and that's not always an indication of where the team will be at later. We referenced who TCU knocked off and so I think the league is incredibly strong this year and I don't know if we know where the finish is going to be. Our focus just needs to be on playing the best we can every night and expecting every team to be good. I think the league is just that strong this year."

JAELYN GLENN FRESHMAN GUARD
On the feeling of gaining a large lead at the end of a tough game…
"It's super exciting just because the fans bring a lot of energy when things like that happen, and then it really makes us want to do it again. It makes us want to get another steal or score again, and the energy they bring lifts up the entire team. The people on the bench bring a lot of energy, cheering super loud all the time. It's really exciting just getting that sense of relief."

On the pressure of playing against more senior guards…
"I think I am able to just push it aside and just play. I do what Coach tells me to do. Obviously, he knows what he's doing so he's not gonna put me in a bad position. Obviously they are also a lot stronger than I am, but I think I'm able to just put that aside and play."

On the crowd energy today…
"It's really nice. They just bring so much energy and that gives our team so much energy. And the three gives our team energy. Then, we go down and we are like get a stop, get a stop because they are on a run and we just need to stop that run as soon as we can. Just the crowd being there makes you want to play your best and do whatever you can to pull out a win."

On what she has learned half way through the season…
"I feel like I am a lot stronger than I give myself credit for in the past. I think my shot has gotten a lot better since the summer and past years. Just knowing I can play with people who have been playing in the Big 12 for four or five years, they just have a lot of experience. Knowing I can play with them really raises my confidence."

RAEGAN PEBLEY, TCU HEAD COACH
Opening statement…
"All of our games with K-State seem to just kinda grind out and come to those last few minutes right there. And in the end, just some mental errors on our part. A couple of baseline out of bounds situations that Kansas State took advantage of, and then some loose balls that they came up with that turned into possession that they were able to get some scores out of. Turnovers obviously for us were a big problem especially down the stretch and we gotta keep working on that."

On zone defense performance…
"I thought the activity was really good. We were forcing other people to make plays. I just felt like changing defenses on them is really important to do because they just find such a rhythm if you stay in the same defense of how to get her (Ayoka Lee) the ball. We really just tried to change that up a bit. But I'll give these freshmen guards some credit, this is a hard league to be young in, and they are doing a really good job."

On Lauren Heard's offensive performance…
"At the same time I think she did a good job of finding other people scores. And her hockey assists were important in this game as well. She's where a lot of people's game plans begin and ends and thats a lot on her and that's a lot of pressure. But her value to us is more than wins and losses or points and steals. So they did a good job but we still really value what Lauren brings."
