Wildcats Take Hot Start to Oregon State Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Following the best start to a season since 1983, the Kansas State men's golf team looks to continue its momentum on Monday and Tuesday at the Oregon State Invitational, held at the par-71, 7,384-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Oregon.
Excitement around the Wildcat program is at an all-time high following consecutive team championships at the Wildcat Invitational and Old Town Collegiate. It is the first time K-State has won back-to-back titles since 2009 and first time doing so to open a season since 1983.
The performances garnered national recognition as the Wildcats are now ranked as the nation's No. 21 team in the Bushnell/Golfweek D1 Coaches Poll.
It's been the depth of the K-State squad that has keyed the early success.
All five scoring lineup members finished in the top-20 of the leaderboard in both events, which is the first time in school history that five Wildcats were in the top-20 in consecutive tournaments.
The course will present a new challenge for K-State but one head coach Grant Robbins believes his team is ready for.
"We are looking forward to competing in Oregon this weekend," said Robbins. "It's a golf course that we aren't familiar with, so it will be important for us to be diligent in our practice round and learn as much as we can very quickly. It's a course that can be set up pretty long and can play difficult, so I am sure ball striking will be at a premium."
Robbins will send out the same lineup combination used at the Old Town Collegiate, with Cooper Schultz, Will Hopkins, Nicklaus Mason, Laurenz Schiergen, and Tim Tillmanns set to represent the Wildcats in Corvallis.
Combined, those five guys already have 22 even or under-par rounds, 10 top-20 finishes, and a 69.80 stroke average.
Luke O'Neill will also be making the trip to compete as an individual. This is O'Neill's second appearance this season after finishing 1-over par 217 and tying for 13th place at the Wildcat Invitational.
Joining the Wildcats and host-school Oregon State in a 15-team field is Boise State, Cal State Fullerton, Gonzaga, Idaho, Pacific, Sacramento State, Sam Houston State, Seattle, Southern Miss, Tarleton State, Utah, Utah Tech, and Washington State.
K-State will have an opportunity to make history if it is able to win another title, as it would be the first Wildcat team to ever win three-straight events.
The first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament will be held on Monday, with the final round scheduled for Tuesday. Play will begin with a shotgun start on both days at 10:15 a.m. (CT).
As always, fans can follow live scoring throughout both days at Golfstat.com.
