MANHATTAN, Kan.- The Kansas State track and field team hosted the K-State Winter Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 10) featuring schools Oklahoma, William Carey, Haskell Indian Nations and Nebraska.
The Wildcats earned eight first-place finishes on the day, including in the men's and women's pole vault, shot put and 4x400-meter relays as well as the men's weight throw, high jump and 600 yards and women's 60-meter hurdles.
Starting the day off in field events, the women's weight throw saw six Wildcats compete with sophomore Monique Hardy taking second with a mark of 20.37m/66-10. Juniors Emma Robbins (3rd; 19.86m/65-2), Jasmine Greer (4th; 17.80m/58-4.75) and Emily Fuhr (5th; 17.26m/56-7.50) rounded out the top-five. "Monique had to redshirt last year, so she didn't really compete hardly at all last year." Director of Track and Field Cliff Rovelto said. "And so, her mark for her, even at this point of time, average at best, maybe less than average. But it has been a long time since she's competed."
In the pole vault only K-State competed for both the men and women. Freshman Claire Bybee (1st; 3.70m/12-1.50) earned her first collegiate title in her first collegiate meet, while junior Jesse Pinkley (1st; 4.60m/15-1) also earned first place as the only competitor.
Junior Kade McCall won the weight throw with a huge personal best at 21.08m/69-2, exceeding his previous best of 19.98m from January 2022.
"That was great. Coach [Greg] Watson thought that he was ready to throw pretty well, and obviously he did."
The Wildcats took residence in the men's high jump top-three with sophomore Kam Garrett (1st; 2.11m/6-11), junior Devon Richardson (2nd; 2.11m/6-11) and sophomore transfer Bryce Collins (3rd; 2.01m/6-7).
K-State saw three athletes compete in both the men's and women's shot put. Sophomore Grace Thompson (4th; 14.86m/48-9) and juniors Jasmine Greer (5th; 14.40m/47-3) and Jaycee Schroeder (6th; 14.22m/46-8) all performed well in the women's division. For the men, sophomore Darius O'Connell recorded a new personal best at 17.34m/56-10.75 in fourth place. Senior Vitoria Alves won the 60-meter hurdles at 8.41 seconds with freshman Delaney Wright coming in third at 9.68 seconds in her first collegiate event. Sophomore Prithviraj Chougule completed in a new 60m dash personal best by one-tenth of a second at 7.05 seconds, finishing seventh.

For the men, junior Tim Lambert Jr. came in fourth at 34.72 seconds, Prithviraj Chougule also competing in his first 300-meter dash with a sixth-place time of 36.78.
Three out of five athletes in the 600 yards ran a new personal best. Junior Jessica Caraway (5th; 1:30.37) led the women with Reagan Hukill (6th; 1:35.69) and Claire Bybee (7th; 1:35.95) both running a new best. Sophomore Will Carroll won with a time of at 1:14.9, while Jesse Pinkley ran his first 600 yards at 1:19.37 to finish in fifth place.
Both the men and women won the 4x400m relay, the women's relay consisting of freshman Twaneise Johnson, senior Shalysa Wray, junior Urte Bacianskaite and Delaney Wright finished with a time of 3:58.39. The men's team consisting of Fort Hays senior transfer Jack Pakkebier, sophomores Emil Uhlin and Carl af Forselles and junior Gabriel Louw finished at 3:23.29.
"There were people that for the first time they've ever ran indoors in a competition," Rovelto said. "It's a learning deal, they'll be okay, we have a long way to go, but I think we're in a decent place. It's just a younger group, and more inexperienced group and it's just going to take us longer to get ready."
Kansas State will compete again on Jan. 13, 2023 in the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular in Topeka, Kan. at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility.
