Lee Reaches 1500-Career Point Mark as K-State Wins 13th Home Game
Feb 05, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Playing in front of its largest home crowd of the season on Saturday night at Bramlage Coliseum, (25/rv) K-State held back Texas Tech and National Player of the Year candidate Ayoka Lee surpassed the 1,500-point mark for her career in the Wildcats' 82-75 win.
A boisterous crowd of 5,588 witnessed Lee becoming the 13th-player in program history to score 1,500 or more points in a career, as Lee tallied a team-high 31 points on 12-of-15 shooting and a 7-of-9 effort from the foul line.
"It's not really something that crosses my mind too much," said Lee about the milestone. "It's great. I'm thankful for it. Thankful for the moments I get to celebrate with my team."
Lee was the fastest player in program history to reach the 1,500-career point mark, achieving the milestone in 77 career games played. The center from Byron, Minnesota, is the first player in the 54-year history of the program to achieve the 1,000 and 1,500-career point milestones in the same season, as she reached the 1,000-career point mark on November 14 against Western Kentucky.
With her 12 made field goals on Saturday, Lee improved her NCAA Division I-leading season total to 235 made field goals which moved her into ninth on the K-State single-season field goals made list.
Lee also hauled in a team-high seven rebounds. With the effort, Lee increased her career rebound total to 788 and passing Shaelyn Martin (2014-18; 782) and Eileen Feeney (1976-80; 783) for 10th in school history for career rebounds.
Joining Lee in double figures was the freshmen trio of Jaelyn Glenn, Brylee Glenn and Serena Sundell. The three players combined for 42 points, as Jaelyn Glenn scored 16, Brylee Glenn poured in 14 and Sundell chipped in with 12.
"I thought it was a heck of a game," said K-State head coach Jeff Mittie. "Both teams offensively were really good tonight. I think both teams defensively tried to do some things, but I think both teams were in pretty good rhythm and I was proud of our group for really digging deep in stretches of this game and thought balanced scoring tonight was the key."
This was the first time this season in which Lee was joined in double figures by all three of K-State's freshmen. K-State is 11-0 this season when three or more players reach double figures in scoring in the same game.
Jaelyn Glenn added a career-high six steals, five rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot to her final stat line. Brylee Glenn tallied four assists and two steals. Sundell, the Big 12 freshman leader in assists, notched seven assists, three rebounds and a blocked shot.
K-State (17-6, 7-4 Big 12) dashed out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter, as Jaelyn Glenn scored eight of the 14 points including a pair of 3-pointers.
Texas Tech (9-12, 2-8) pulled to within one, 20-19, as they made eight straight field goals to narrow the deficit. The Wildcats would score the final two baskets of the quarter, finding Lee for a pair of layups and give K-State a 24-19 lead.
The Lady Raiders would take their lone lead of the night by two, 26-24, with 6:20 to play in the second quarter on a three-pointer from Chantae Embry. Following the 3-pointer, the Wildcats ended the quarter on a 10-4 run to hold a 34-30 lead at the half.
K-State shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the first half, including a 56.3 percent effort in the first quarter. Lee and Jaelyn Glenn paced the first half effort with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Wildcats doubled its halftime lead, 42-34, in the first two and a half minutes of the third quarter. Lee tallied the first four points and was followed by a layup from Brylee Glenn and a pair of free throws from Jaelyn Glenn to force a Lady Raider timeout.
During the timeout, the Texas Tech bench was assessed a technical foul. Lee made both free throws to up the advantage to 10, 44-34. On the ensuing K-State possession, Sundell was fouled and converted both free throws to build the lead to 12, 46-34, with 7:02 to play.
After K-State built a 12-point lead, 51-39, Texas Tech cut the K-State lead to four, 53-49, with 1:34 left in the quarter. Vivian Gray scored eight straight points for the Lady Raiders to trim the deficit. The Wildcats would up the advantage back to six, 57-51, entering the fourth quarter.
Brylee Glenn opened the fourth quarter with the first seven points for K-State to push the K-State lead to eight, 64-56. The Lady Raiders would bring the margin to four on three occasions, but a Jaelyn Glenn steal fastbreak layup would give K-State a six-point lead, 73-67, with 3:01 left.
An old-fashioned three-point play from Lee with 1:22 put K-State in front by nine, 80-71. A pair of Sundelll free throws with 36 seconds left sealed the final margin.
K-State shot 60.0 percent (15-of-25) from the field in the second half including a 66.7 percent (10-of-15) fourth quarter performance.
For the night, K-State shot 54.9 percent (28-of-51) from the floor and were 22-of-28 (.786) from the foul line.
The Wildcats handed out 23 assists on Saturday. This was the eighth time this season K-State has handed out 20 or more assists in a game and own a 7-1 mark in those games. Over the last 15 seasons, K-State is 78-7 (.918) when dishing 20 or more assists in a game.
Kansas State will return to the road on Wednesday, as the Wildcats visit Waco, Texas, to face (9/12) Baylor at 7 p.m. Wednesday's game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. The game will also be available on the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com and on the K-State Sports app.
WHAT THEY SAID
JEFF MITTIE K-STATE HEAD COACH
Opening Statement...
"I thought it was a heck of a game. Both teams offensively were really good tonight. I think both teams defensively tried to do some things, but I think both teams were in pretty good rhythm and I was proud of our group for really digging deep in stretches of this game and thought balanced scoring tonight was the key. I mean we tried everything against (Vivan) Gray, we just couldn't get her stopped. Switched, trapped, different people starting off on her, so different people were switching on to her, and had different people coming and she was just that good tonight. I'll look back on the film and see what we can do better but my guess is we just need to tip our cap to her and say great game she had and move on. I was proud of our group the way they battled because some key defensive play when they made runs Jay ( Jaelyn Glenn) had a big steal in that stretch, (Emilee Ebert) had a steal in that stretch. We got some big plays so Brylee (Glenn) got a steal in that stretch. So we got a good balance down the stretch. Laura Macke makes a big play, Emilee (Ebert) gets a jumper in the lane. We had good options down the stretch and I think that was a key for us."
On getting to the free throw line 28 times making 22...
" Well it was critical for us to get to the free throw lin. It was called a little bit tighter than we have seen in the past. But I also felt like we drove it harder than we've been driving it, That is something we have been emphasizing in practice. I think we have some abilities to do it and continue to do it better, so proud and good to see the progress in that area."
On what kind of asset the Glenn sisters are for this team...
"I think couple things are just really competitive. They're just really good players. Both ends of the floor. They're talented. When I watched them in AAU ball, they just played every game hard. I see that in AAU, you see some teams take off. You see some players take off. What impressed me the most was if the ball was in play they were playing hard. They were doing all the things necessary fighting to the end. When you are talking about two players that are out there going up against a kid like (Vivan) Gray. You don't face that in High School. You don't face a player like Gray in high school defensively. That you can do everything and she still gets to her spot. And they keep growing in those areas. And offensively, I think where we saw the most growth tonight was just driving hard to the basket and getting the angle they wanted. More physical and so yeah they've been huge asset to our team on both ends of floor."
On the importance of Serena Sundell to this team...
"I think she was really solid. At the end of the day for a point guard you just have to judge it on winning. Well shoot her shot, that is just hard to do when they are pressing and she's probably faituaged out there but she never asked to come out. She just doesn't and I've got to try and give her some rest here going forward. But she does a good job at running the team and she's learning there wasn't perfect spots tonight. We had a couple of calls and she said I thought you said this. I said I also gave you the hand signal to you, you know we have a play called nose and I'm touching my nose. And she said Oh I thought he said this. I'm like I'm touching my nose. There are things where she has what we call Serena moments that are kind of fun, but not so fun at times, but great competitor. She's like them honestly (Glenn Sisters) got a fun spirit about them. They come everyday practice ready to go. And it matters to her. She's competitive. And think the other thing is, I said to start this comment was just that you judge a point guard can she get her team in position to win and she continues to do that force."
JAELYN GLENN, FRESHMAN GUARD
On if the guards did anything to make sure to get the passes from different angles...
"Just trying not to stand you know, having divers coming when the ball does go in, skipping the ball to make the defense move and then getting Yoki (Ayoka Lee) to repost tand getting that person to her. After like the defense isn't quite settled yet."
On what its like playing with her sister...
"Of course it always great coming in with people that you know but of course like it's my twin sister, "my other half" So she knows how I play. We played together for as long as I can remember, we know each other styles, we can feed off of each other, make plays for each other. Just things like that . So it's really just great having someone here who is family of course you'd love having your family around you. Just knows how I play."
On her contributions of adding to the balanced offensive attack...
"It's just a awesome feeling that you're helping your team out to, pull out a win. To keep the balance scoring coach is always telling us like don't stick with the ball, move it, move it. So I think if we just keep doing that, keep moving getting people to move around move the ball around. I think that will help out a lot with keeping our balanced scoring and yeah I think that'll help us out a lot in the long run too."
AYOKA LEE, JUNIOR CENTER
On coming back in the 2nd quarter with foul trouble...
"I don't think it was a ton different. I think just like playing smarter, I think playing smarter on defense, I thought that we did a good job of shutting off the play where I was involved with the trap. So they weren't using that as much, so I think that helped us out because I wasn't in that position a lot."
On the 3-pronged defense from Texas Tech...
"I think just paying more attention to just like the angles and just posting up harder and like making it harder for them to move me I think that was the biggest thing. Yeah, just kind of holding my ground. I think was the biggest thing."
On passing 1500 in a career how does that feel...
"Yeah. It's great. It's not really something that crosses my mind too much. But yeah it's great. I'm thankful for it. Thankful for the moments I get to celebrate with my team."
On having the Glenn sisters on the team...
"I love having them on the team. I love them off the court. I think their personalities just bring just so much life to just our culture and just everything about it. On the court Bry (Brylee Glenn), I know she's going to lock up on D. and it is just so much fun playing defense with Brylee. And J(Jaelyn Glenn) I know she's gonna hit the three on offense and just do her job on defense too. The way they play and how hard they play you know you can trust them to do their job. You know that it means a lot to them. And yeah it's just so much fun."
KRISTA GERLICH, TEXAS TECH HEAD COACH
On a three-prong defensive approach to Ayoka Lee and K-State breaking it down…
"Well, we were a little bit undersized on the post this time, so it was a little bit difficult for us to keep her (Ayoka Lee) from catching it. I did think that they elevated their guards on the perimeter a bit more and so it was a little bit tougher to get the defensive help. I thought that they did a great job of skipping the ball and moving and I think Lee does a fantastic job of footwork and understanding where the ball needs to go."
On her impressions of the Glenn sisters…
"They are tough. They can both shoot it well and it's great that they're aggressive with their drives. Coach Mittie is known for how he recruits. He has a system and he recruits it. They are really big guards on the perimeter and a lot of length that can really shoot the basketball. It is a nice compliment to Lee."
On Lee coming back in the second quarter and what made it difficult to stop her…
"I think we probably went away from attacking her a little bit and probably should have attacked her a little bit more off those ball screens. We couldn't really get to the rim and get the calls, so it is difficult to create that if we do not attack. We definitely needed to attack a little bit more."
A boisterous crowd of 5,588 witnessed Lee becoming the 13th-player in program history to score 1,500 or more points in a career, as Lee tallied a team-high 31 points on 12-of-15 shooting and a 7-of-9 effort from the foul line.
